You set one of nine recline positions before installing, with the car on level ground and the base flat and parallel on the vehicle seat. Up to 3 inches of the base may hang over the front edge in harness mode. With the lap-shoulder belt, the preferred method, the belt goes through the ClickTight and closing it takes the place of locking the retractor. The manual's checklist asks for both closed locked symbols to be fully visible, the recline indicator still in the right section once the child is in, and no more than 1 inch of movement at the belt path. Lower anchors are limited to 30 lb rear-facing and 35 lb forward-facing.
The manual says to secure the tether for forward-facing harness mode, and not to use it on an aircraft. It also states that the anti-rebound bar must be removed for forward-facing; the overview labels the bar as select models. On a plane, the seat is certified in harness mode only. Rear-facing, the aircraft lap belt goes through the rear-facing belt path; forward-facing, the manual says to recline the seat to position 8 first. In booster mode it is not certified for aircraft, because a booster needs a lap and shoulder belt.
The head and middle infant inserts, or the lower infant insert, may be used from 5 to 20 lb rear-facing. No insert is used above 20 lb rear-facing or forward-facing, and the head restraint bib must be unfolded at 20 lb. The positioning layer must be folded down from 5 to 40 lb rear-facing and from 30 to 40 lb forward-facing, and must be folded up for booster mode from 40 to 120 lb. When folded up, it is fastened behind the head restraint bib. In booster mode there is no base overhang allowed at all.
The cover comes off in sections, with separate steps for the head restraint cover, seat pan cover, shell side cover, lower seat cover and anti-rebound bar cover. For the cover, the manual points to the care label and says not to bleach or iron. The harness is sponge cleaned and never machine washed or dried, and the buckle is rinsed in warm water and tested until each tongue clicks. The cup holders are removable and dishwasher safe, and either the cup holders or their caps must always be in place.
