Compare infant and convertible seatsThere is no single best seat: the right one is the seat that fits your child, your car and the way you use it. What I can give you is the extremes of the published numbers, so you know which model leads on each one before you shortlist. These come from the manufacturers’ own specifications, checked on September 17, 2026. Nothing here is tested or scored by this site.

Every infant model on the US market, by the manufacturer’s own limits, widest fit range first. Scan the numbers that matter in your car: width for three across, seat weight for carrying, and the weight each mode really allows. To filter and sort the same seats, use the list below the table.
Limits and specifications are each manufacturer’s own, checked September 17, 2026. A dash means the maker does not publish that number. A highlighted number is simply the highest or lowest value in this table, not a recommendation. Prices are Amazon’s, or the manufacturer’s own where Amazon has no listing, as of the date each was read, and are subject to change; the seller’s price at checkout applies. Photos come from the same Amazon listing or, where Amazon has none, the manufacturer’s site.

No single seat is best for everyone, and I do not rank them. The useful questions are whether it fits your baby now (minimum weight and height), whether it fits your car, how much the carrier weighs if you will lift it often, and whether it works with your stroller. The standouts above show which models lead on each published number.
Until the child reaches any one of that seat’s applicable limits, including height, weight or head clearance. The model’s number or advertised age range does not tell you how long it will fit your child.
Not always. Some convertible seats permit use from birth, provided the child meets every requirement and the seat fits both child and vehicle. An infant seat’s main practical difference is its removable carrier.
General guidance: NHTSA car seats and booster seats (opens in a new tab). Follow both manuals for your exact configuration.
