The LiteClik30 XT SafePlus is a rear-facing-only infant car seat for babies from 4 to 30 lb and 30 inches or less. Its included base installs with LATCH or a seat belt and always needs the top tether. The carrier can also be belted in without the base, and the seat expires 8 years after purchase.

The XT suits a parent whose chosen seating position has a top tether anchor, because the manual requires the tether whenever the base is used. Diono says a Maxi-Cosi adapter may let it fit other brands' strollers. The RXT shares the base and the 4 to 30 lb and 30 in limits; its difference is a no-rethread harness set by moving the headrest, where the XT's straps are rethreaded by hand.

What to know before you live with it

The base always uses the top tether

The manual requires the top tether whenever the carrier rides in its base. For LATCH, take the connectors from under the base, attach the tether loosely, clip one connector per lower anchor, then push the base down while pulling the adjustment strap. For a seat belt, open the EasyPath lock-off, attach the tether, route and buckle the belt, tighten it, then close the lock-off and pull up to confirm it is locked. The base should move less than 1 in at the belt path. The tether is tightened last, only enough to remove slack, without pushing on the seat.

Recline, overhang and the handle

With the vehicle on level ground, the bubble indicator on each side of the base must sit within the check marks; the 2-position leveling foot swings forward and locks to change the angle. No more than 20% of the base may overhang the seat cushion. The handle has three positions, and in the base only position 2, the carry position, is allowed. Without the base, the handle must be in position 3, the anti-rebound position. The lap belt runs through both side guides, the level line must be level with the ground, and the carrier bottom cannot overhang the seat.

Inserts and harness height

The SitRite Comfort Insert includes a gray newborn support insert and a black travel high wedge, used together until they are no longer needed. As the baby grows, the manual says to remove the gray insert first, then the wedge, so the lowest harness slot is at or below the shoulders. If the head slumps forward, remove the headrest cushion, because slouching can block the airway. To move the harness, unhook the straps from the metal plate on the back, rethread them, and reattach the left strap first. The top of the head must stay at least 1 in below the shell.

Removing and washing the cover

Take out the harness and buckle pad, then pull the cover from the outer grooves of the shell, over the belt guides, and over the harness adjustment and stroller release buttons. The seat cover, comfort insert, buckle pad and harness pads can be machine washed separately in cold water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, or hand washed, then dried flat away from direct sunlight. Bleach, ironing and dry cleaning are ruled out. The harness and buckle straps are spot cleaned with a damp cloth and are never soaked or submerged.
