The LiteClik30 R SafePlus is a rear-facing-only infant car seat for babies from 4 to 30 lb and 30 inches or less, with the top of the head at least 1 inch below the shell. The carrier clicks into a base installed with LATCH or a seat belt, can be belted in without it, and expires 8 years after purchase.

My take on the LiteClik30 R SafePlus Infant Car Seat and Base

The LiteClik30 R suits a family that wants a carrier and base whose base uses an anti-rebound bar, with no top tether step in its manual. Its main limit is the stroller: Diono says it is compatible only with the Quantum4. The LiteClik30 XT has the same 4 to 30 lb and 30 in limits, but its base requires a top tether, and Diono lists it as compatible with Maxi-Cosi adapters.

What to know before you live with it

Installing the base with LATCH or a seat belt

Before first use, the anti-rebound bar clips into the base with the SafePlus Engineering logo facing away from it. On level ground, the bubble indicator on the side of the base must sit within the check marks, and the five-position leveling foot adjusts the angle. For LATCH, attach one connector per anchor, press the middle of the base down while pulling the strap, then close the lock-off panels. For a seat belt, route it through the EasyPath lock-off, tighten it, and close both panels; with a lap/shoulder belt, the lock-off holds the belt so the retractor does not need to be locked. No more than 20% of the base may overhang the seat cushion.

Without the base, and on a plane

The carrier installs with the lap portion of the vehicle belt threaded through the guides on both sides. A lap/shoulder belt's retractor must be locked first, and the manual rules out a non-locking retractor without a belt locking clip. The level line on the side label must be level with the ground, and the bottom of the carrier cannot overhang the vehicle seat. The handle must be in position 4, the anti-rebound position. This is the only way it is certified for aircraft, because the aircraft belt buckle interferes with the base's belt path. Either way, it should move less than 1 in at the belt path.

Harness, buckle and handle positions

The straps must sit at or below the shoulders, with the top of the head at least 1 in below the top of the shell. To change height, loosen the harness, remove the straps from the metal plate on the back, and push them through a new slot. The buckle has two positions, and the J-routing method shortens a buckle strap that is too long for a proper fit. The child must not sit directly on top of the buckle. The SitRite Comfort Insert is optional. The handle has four positions: in the base, only position 2 or 3. The manual warns against placing the carrier on counters, tables or a shopping cart.

Taking the cover off and washing it

To remove the cover, take out the insert, buckle pad and harness, pull the plastic tabs from the sides, push the canopy toward the handle, and work the cover off from the outer edge. The seat cover, infant support pads and buckle and harness pads can be machine washed separately in cold water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, or hand washed, then dried flat away from direct sunlight. Bleach, ironing and dry cleaning are ruled out. The harness and buckle straps are spot cleaned with a damp cloth and never soaked. Only the buckle mechanism may be rinsed, in warm water, with no detergent or lubricant.

Diono says the average child reaches 30 in shortly after turning one and 30 lb shortly after two and a half. It says most children outgrow an infant seat by height before weight.

Can I use LATCH without the base?

No. Diono says the carrier has no LATCH system of its own, so LATCH works only through the base. Without the base, it installs with the vehicle seat belt.

The manual says not to use it once it is eight years past the date of purchase. Diono says it uses the date of manufacture when the purchase date cannot be determined.

How is the LiteClik30 XT different from the R?

Diono rates the XT for the same 4 to 30 lb and up to 30 in. Its base requires the top tether whenever it is used, and Diono says a Maxi-Cosi adapter may let it fit other strollers.
