A newborn needs a rear-facing seat whose published minimum weight and height include them, and a harness that can be set at or below their shoulders. Both an infant carrier and a convertible that permits newborn use can do that; the difference is the carrier detaches and the convertible lasts longer.

Which seats accept a newborn?

The limit that excludes a newborn is the seat’s published minimum, and it is not the same across the catalogue. Counted on September 17, 2026:

92 models accept a 4 lb baby: 62 infant carriers and 30 convertible, rotating or all-in-one seats that permit newborn use. Allow 5 lb instead and 151 models qualify. The lowest published minimum height is 15.7 in. Height matters as much as weight, and so does the lowest harness position: it has to sit at or below the shoulders.

Newborn car seat questions

What car seat should a newborn be in?

A rear-facing seat that publishes a minimum weight at or below your baby's, and a lowest harness position at or below their shoulders. That is an infant carrier for most families, because it lifts out and fits a small baby well, but a convertible that permits newborn use is equally valid if you would rather buy one seat.

Can I put my newborn in a car seat straight away?

Yes, and in the US a newborn cannot leave hospital by car without one. What matters is that the seat's own minimum limits include the baby, that any newborn insert is used exactly as the manual describes, and that the harness sits snugly at or below the shoulders.

What about a premature or very small baby?

Check the seat's published minimum weight first: in this catalogue the lowest start at 3 lb, most at 4 lb, and a large group only from 5 lb. A hospital may also ask for a period of observation in the seat before discharge. Follow the hospital's advice and the manual together.

How long should a newborn sit in a car seat?

Limit journey time and take breaks on longer trips. A car seat is for travel: outside the car a newborn is better off lying flat, and manufacturers say the seat should not be used for sleeping at home. Watch the head position, because a newborn's airway depends on the recline being right.
