Who is the PIPA aire infant car seat for?

The Nuna PIPA aire is a rear-facing-only infant car seat for babies from 4 to 30 lb and 16 to 30 inches, with the head at least 1 inch below the top of the seat. It comes with the PIPA series base, can be belted in without it, and the manual points to a label for the expiration date.

Reasons to consider it

  • A carrier Nuna lists at 6 lb without canopy and inserts
  • Two base installs, rigid lower anchors or a lap/shoulder belt under the lock-off, with an optional stability leg
  • Two baseless belt routings, one with the shoulder belt wrapped around the back through the blue guide
  • FAA certified for aircraft use with or without the base

Things to weigh up

  • Rear-facing only, with a 30 lb and 30 inch limit, so a convertible seat comes next
  • Shoulder strap height changes by rethreading each strap at the metal splitter plate
  • The manual gives no number of years; you read the expiration date from the label under the base or seat
  • One manual page says it must be installed with the base, while a later section shows two baseless installs, so I would ask Nuna which applies

My take on the PIPA aire infant car seat

The PIPA aire suits a family that lifts and carries the carrier a lot, since Nuna lists it at 6 lb without canopy and inserts and calls it the lightest seat in the PIPA series. The base is the PIPA series base, which levels with a bubble and has a steel stability leg. The PIPA rx carrier is listed at 7.6 lb and comes with the RELX base, which Nuna gives a 4 position on-the-go recline.

How the PIPA aire infant car seat installs

Rigid LATCH
Rigid LATCH base (True lock). Rigid connectors click straight onto the vehicle's lower anchor bars, which removes the strap slack that causes loose installs.
Harness
5-point harness. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

At 17.5 in at its widest, this seat is one of the narrower ones in its class and is a candidate for three across in many mid-size cars. It weighs 6 lb, which matters if you will move it between cars or carry it through an airport.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Certified for aircraft use, so it can travel as a seat rather than checked baggage.

What features does the PIPA aire infant car seat have?

  • Load leg (steel stability leg on base)

  • Side impact protection
  • 5-point harness
  • UPF 50+ canopy

What to know before you live with it

Installing the PIPA series base

Park on level ground and set the base on a forward-facing vehicle seat. Use the recline adjustment until the bubble touches the line. For lower anchors, rotate the rigid connectors down, hook them on and check that green shows on both. For a lap/shoulder belt, route both parts through the opening labeled 'belt here' and under the lock-off, tighten while pressing the base down, then close the lock-off. Using both methods together is allowed. The stability leg can be used or stored with either install, but its indicator must show green and it must not lift the base. The base should not move more than 1 inch at the belt path.

Without the base, and on a plane

The manual shows two baseless installs. In both, the lap belt goes under both lap belt guides. The shoulder belt either lies against the vehicle seat back or wraps around the back of the carrier through the blue shoulder belt guide. A rolled towel or pool noodle may adjust the angle until the blue line on the side label is level with the ground. Lock the belt, or ask Nuna for a locking clip. On an aircraft, the lap belt goes under both guides with the blue line level to the floor. The base can also go on the plane with the lap belt through its lock-off, but Nuna does not recommend the stability leg there.

Inserts, harness and handle

The head and body supports are for a snug fit on small babies, and the head support straps go only in the top two harness slots. The low birth weight pillow on the back of the body support must come out once a snug fit is possible without it, at about 11 lb. The shoulder pads and crotch pad must be removed once the child reaches 22 lb. The straps must sit at or just below the shoulders, and moving them means unhooking each loop from the splitter plate underneath. The handle has 3 locked positions. Nuna recommends the carry position in the car, and the handle must not touch the door or the seat in front.

Cleaning, strollers and everyday warnings

The care label on the soft goods gives the washing instructions, and the foam under the seat pad stays in place. Clean the shell, handle and harness straps with mild detergent, water and a soft cloth, then air dry. Rinse the buckle in warm water only, with no soap or lubricant. The manual says to use the carrier only with Nuna strollers or Nuna adapters, and notes that it attaches to the Nuna TAVO series without adapters. It also warns against shopping carts, counter tops, beds and sofas, and says to place blankets over the child only after the harness is tightened.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect; Nuna lists 6 colors of this seat.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Nuna so you hear about the next one.
