What to know before you live with it
Installing the RELX base
The base installs with rigid lower anchors or with a lap and shoulder belt, and the manual says using both together is acceptable. With the rigid anchors, you push them onto the vehicle anchors until the indicators show green. If a gap is left at the seat back, push the base until it clicks into one of three retracted positions. For a belt install, the lap and shoulder belt route under the lock off, and the base should move no more than 1 inch side to side at the belt path. Nuna recommends the stability leg, which must show green and must not lift the base more than 1 inch.
Recline, harness and inserts
The RELX base has 4 recline positions, which you can change without uninstalling it. Positions 1 and 2 are for 4 to 21 lb and 16 to 26 in, and positions 3 and 4 are for 21 to 30 lb and 26 to 30 in. The harness straps must be at or just below the shoulders. To move them, you rethread them from the splitter plate at the back. The top of the head must be at least 1 inch below the top of the seat. The low birth weight pillow must come out once the harness fits snugly without it, at about 11 lb, and the shoulder and crotch pads must be removed at 22 lb.
Without a base, on a plane and on a stroller
Without the base, the vehicle lap belt goes under both lap belt guides. The shoulder belt either lies against the vehicle seat back or wraps around the back of the carrier through the blue shoulder belt guide. The angle is right when the blue line on the side label is level with the ground. A rolled towel or pool noodle may be used to adjust it. On an aircraft, it installs with the lap belt, with or without the base. Nuna does not recommend the stability leg there. The carrier fits Nuna strollers with adapters sold separately (the TAVO series needs none) and other brands with a ring adapter.
Handle, fabrics and cleaning
The handle has 3 locked positions, and Nuna recommends the carry position in the car. The carrier and handle must not touch the door or the seat in front. The product page says the fabrics and inserts are machine washable. The manual points you to the care label for washing and drying. It says not to remove the foam under the seat pad, and to clean the shell, handle and harness straps with mild detergent, water and a soft cloth. The buckle should be rinsed only in warm water, with no soap, solvent or lubricant, because those can make it malfunction.
Is the PIPA aire rx infant car seat recalled?
