Who is the PIPA rx infant car seat for?

The Nuna PIPA rx is a rear-facing-only infant car seat for babies from 4 to 30 lb and 16 to 30 inches, with the head at least 1 inch below the top of the seat. Its PIPA RELX base reclines while installed, the carrier can be belted in without it, and the expiration date is on a label.

Reasons to consider it

  • RELX base recline positions 1 and 2 for 4 to 21 lb and 16 to 26 inches, and 3 and 4 for 21 to 30 lb and 26 to 30 inches
  • A base bottom that retracts to three positions to close a gap against the vehicle seat back
  • Two crotch belt slots with three routings for a snug fit as the baby grows
  • FAA certified for aircraft use with or without the base

Things to weigh up

  • Rear-facing only; Nuna's FAQ puts the end of use at approximately 18 months
  • The carrier is listed at 7.6 lb without canopy and inserts, plus approx. 1 lb for the canopy and insert
  • Shoulder strap height changes by rethreading each strap at the metal splitter plate
  • The manual gives no number of years; the expiration date is on the label under the base or seat

My take on the PIPA rx infant car seat

The PIPA rx suits a family that wants a base whose recline can change as the baby grows without reinstalling it. The trade-off is carrier weight: Nuna lists it at 7.6 lb without canopy and inserts. The PIPA aire carrier is listed at 6 lb and comes with the simpler PIPA series base, which has a bubble level and a steel stability leg.

How the PIPA rx infant car seat installs

Rigid LATCH
Rigid LATCH base (True lock). Rigid connectors click straight onto the vehicle's lower anchor bars, which removes the strap slack that causes loose installs.
Harness
5-point harness. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

At 17.5 in at its widest, this seat is one of the narrower ones in its class and is a candidate for three across in many mid-size cars. It weighs 7.6 lb, which matters if you will move it between cars or carry it through an airport.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Certified for aircraft use, so it can travel as a seat rather than checked baggage.

What features does the PIPA rx infant car seat have?

  • PIPA RELX base included
  • Rigid LATCH base (True lock)
  • Load leg with crumple zone (stability leg on base)
  • Anti-rebound panel (base)
  • Baseless install with vehicle belt
  • Side impact protection
  • 5-point harness

What to know before you live with it

Installing the PIPA RELX base

With lower anchors, rotate the rigid connectors down, set the base on a forward-facing vehicle seat and push the connectors down and forward until the indicators show green. If a gap remains to the vehicle seat back, push the base until it clicks into one of three retracted positions; a gap is acceptable if it clicks through all of them. With a lap/shoulder belt, the lap part goes across 'lap belt here', the shoulder part diagonally across 'shoulder belt here', both under the lock-off. You lock the vehicle belt only after the lock-off is closed. Belt installs must move no more than 1 inch at the belt path.

Recline and stability leg

The RELX base has four recline positions chosen by size: 1 and 2 for 4 to 21 lb and 16 to 26 inches, 3 and 4 for 21 to 30 lb and 26 to 30 inches. You push the recline button all the way down and slide the top of the base. If the button does not pop back up, the recline is not locked. After any change, pull up on the handle to confirm the carrier is still latched. The stability leg's indicator should show green. If it lifts the base more than 1 inch off the seat, adjust it, and never use it to recline the base. The manual recommends the leg with the belt install.

Without the base, on a plane and on a stroller

The carrier can be installed without a base in two ways, with the lap belt under both lap belt guides and the shoulder belt either against the seat back or wrapped behind through the blue guide. The blue line on the side label must be level with the ground. If the belt cannot lock, a locking clip goes 1/2 inch from the vehicle buckle. The seat is certified for commercial aircraft with or without the base, and Nuna does not recommend the stability leg on a plane. It attaches to Nuna strollers and other brands with adapters sold separately. The manual also says the PIPA rx works with the PIPA series base, sold separately.

Inserts, harness, handle and cleaning

The head and body supports are for small babies, and the head support straps go only in the top two harness slots. The body support must come out once a snug fit is possible without it, at about 11 lb. The shoulder and crotch pads can be removed once the child reaches 22 lb. Harness straps sit at or just below the shoulders. The handle has 3 locked positions, Nuna recommends the carry position in the car, and the handle must not touch the vehicle interior. Washing follows the care label. The shell, handle and straps take mild detergent and a soft cloth, and the buckle is rinsed in warm water only, with no soap or lubricant.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect; Nuna lists 4 colors of this seat.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Nuna so you hear about the next one.
