My take on the Mesa V3 infant car seat

The Mesa V3 suits a family that wants a base with a red-to-green tightness indicator and a carrier that also belts in alone, including with a lap-only belt or a locking clip. The trade-off is weight: UPPAbaby lists the carrier at 9.9 lb and the base at 9 lb. The Aria V2 carrier is listed at 6 lb (without canopy and insert) and its base adds a load leg, but its height limit is 30 inches, its expiry is 7 years and its base is listed at 12.8 lb.

How the Mesa V3 infant car seat installs

Belt lock-off: SmartSecure base installation with red-to-green tightness indicator. A lock-off clamps the vehicle belt so you do not have to switch the belt's retractor into its locked mode.
Lower anchors: Auto-retracting LATCH (base). Check your vehicle manual for which seating positions have anchors, and switch to the seat belt once the child passes the anchor weight limit in the manual.
Harness: No-rethread 5-point harness. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

What to know before you live with it

Installing the base

Park on level ground, set the base with its adjustment foot toward the seat back and press the level adjust button until only green shows between the arrows on both sides. For lower anchors, pull the connectors from their storage pockets, clip them on and push the base into the seat crease so the webbing retracts. The install is complete when the tightness indicator turns from red to green and stays green. For a seat belt, the lap/shoulder or lap-only belt goes through the lock-off, which closes in two sections with a click. The center seat with lower anchors needs anchors no more than 22 inches apart and the vehicle maker's approval.

Without the base, and on a plane

The preferred baseless install routes the lap belt through both carrier guides and wraps the shoulder belt around the back through the rear guide. If it does not reach, an optional routing uses the lap guides only, and a lap-only belt also works. With a lap and shoulder belt, the belt must lock, or you use the locking clip stored under the base, threaded 1 inch from the latch plate. The red line on the carrier must be level with the floor. On an aircraft, only the carrier is certified, installed like the lap-only method on a forward-facing seat. Inflatable belts are not compatible.

Handle, harness and insert

The carry handle locks in four positions: stand, store, carry and rebound. In a vehicle it must be in the 3rd carry position or the 4th rebound position. The no-rethread harness moves with the headrest, which slides up or down when you pull the adjuster tab. Rear-facing, the harness sits at the shoulders or 1 to 2 positions below. The crotch buckle has two slots, and you use the one closest to the child. The infant insert is recommended from 4 to 11 lb, and may stay past 11 lb until the fit criteria are met without it. Harness pads must come off for a preemie.

Taking the fabrics off and washing them

To remove the fabrics, unbuckle the retainer clip and harness, pull the side impact padding forward to free the harness straps, then pull it down from the bottom. The seat padding comes off next. The seat pad, infant insert, buckle pads and shoulder pad machine wash warm on a gentle cycle with mild detergent and tumble dry low, with no bleach, ironing or dry cleaning. The harness webbing and canopy are spot clean only and must air dry completely. If the buckle stops clicking, rinse it under warm running water without detergent or lubricant.

Is the Mesa V3 infant car seat recalled?
