My take on the Arbor Infant Car Seat with StayTight Base

It suits parents buying the Phases travel system who want a base that tensions and locks the vehicle belt for them. Britax lists the carrier at 9.9 lb and the base at 7.4 lb. Compared with the Willow on its Aspen ClickTight base, the limits are the same, but Britax lists the Willow with a 21" seat back and a 10" shoulder width against the Arbor's 18" and 7.75".

How the Arbor Infant Car Seat with StayTight Base installs

Belt lock-off: StayTight base with built-in seat belt tensioner and automatic lock-off. A lock-off clamps the vehicle belt so you do not have to switch the belt's retractor into its locked mode.

What to know before you live with it

Installing the StayTight base

Park on level ground, set the base against the seat back, and adjust the recline until the whole blue marker shows in the window. If you cannot get the angle, the manual allows rolled towels or pool noodles in the seat bight. Open StayTight, route the lap-shoulder belt, a locked lap belt or the lower anchor strap through the belt guides, remove slack, and push StayTight closed. With a lap-shoulder belt you do not need to lock the retractor. The base is installed when it moves less than 1 in. at the belt path. Up to 4 in. of the base may overhang the seat edge.

Installing without the base

For baseless use the manual says to secure the baby in the carrier first, then install it rear-facing. With a lap-shoulder belt you can route the lap part under the baseless belt guides and wrap the shoulder part around the back through the European belt guide. Lock the belt as your vehicle manual describes; if it cannot lock, a locking clip is required. The level line on the carrier label should be level with the ground, and the carry handle must be locked in position 1 or 2. The carrier is secure when it moves less than 1 in. at the belt path.

Harness, inserts and carry handle

The harness ships in the inner loop, which is for babies up to 11 lb; the outer loop covers 4 to 30 lb. Move the straps to the closest slot below the shoulders by unhooking them from the yoke at the back and rethreading. The head pad may be used from 4 to 30 lb, and the infant positioning pillow only below 11 lb. The buckle should be in the slot closest to, but not under, the baby. In the car the handle goes in position 1 or 2; Britax recommends position 1 because ReboundReduce only works there, and position 2 is for carrying.

Cleaning, aircraft and expiry

Follow the care label for the cover, and do not bleach or iron it. The harness and canopy are sponge cleaned with warm water and mild soap; do not machine wash or machine dry them. Rinse the buckle in warm water without soap and test that it clicks. The Arbor is certified for aircraft only when installed without the base, using the aircraft lap belt under the baseless belt guides. Stop using the seat and base after 6 years or a moderate or severe crash.
