The Willow SC suits a family that wants a ClickTight base and a carrier with stain-resistant fabric on select fashions. It is rear-facing only and is outgrown at 30 lb or 32 inches. Its manual gives the same limits, base installs and aircraft rules as the Willow S manual. Britax lists the Cypress with the same limits and dimensions but a 9.7 lb carrier and three padded inserts.

How the Willow SC Infant Car Seat with Alpine Base installs

Belt lock-off: ClickTight installation (Alpine base). A lock-off clamps the vehicle belt so you do not have to switch the belt's retractor into its locked mode.

What to know before you live with it

Installing the Alpine base

The base has a recline foot under it and two recline indicators. With the car on level ground, the whole blue marker must sit between the two lines, and if that cannot be reached, the manual allows a rolled towel or pool noodle in the seat bight, with the recline foot not extended. For a lap-shoulder belt you open the ClickTight, tuck both parts of the belt under it and the belt guides, buckle and close it, without locking the retractor. A lap belt must be locked. The lower connectors come out of a storage compartment, and the lid must be closed before the carrier goes on. Up to 4.7 inches of the base may overhang the seat edge, and it must move less than 1 inch.

Without the base, and on a plane

The carrier can be installed with a vehicle belt alone, with the baby buckled in first. The lap belt goes under the carrier's belt guides, and with a lap-shoulder belt the shoulder part can wrap around the back through the European belt guide. If your vehicle belt cannot lock, the manual says to use a locking clip. The level line on the carrier must be level to the ground. The manual certifies the seat for aircraft only in this baseless form, and says it is not certified on the base because the aircraft belt is not compatible with the base.

Getting the harness to fit

The harness starts in the inner loop, for babies up to 11 lb, and moves to the outer loop for 4 to 30 lb. The hip straps have an optional inner slot up to 11 lb, and changing them means taking the cover off. Shoulder straps go in the closest slot below the shoulders, and the buckle goes in the slot closest to, but not under, the baby. The infant positioning pillow is for babies under 11 lb. Before each trip, the chest clip should sit at armpit level and the harness should be snug enough that you cannot pinch any slack.

Carrying it and using a stroller

The carry handle must be in a locked position in the car. The manual says to always carry in position 1, and Britax recommends position 1 in the vehicle as well, where the built-in ReboundReduce handle is meant to reduce rebound. To take the carrier off the base, you squeeze and hold the release lever, tilt the carrier toward the vehicle seat back and lift it by the handle. The manual warns against placing the carrier on beds, sofas, counters or shopping carts. Not all strollers are compatible, and the manual refers you to the Britax FAQ to check.
