Who is the Doona X Car Seat & Stroller for?

The Doona X is a rear-facing infant car seat with built-in stroller wheels, for babies from 4 to 30 lb who are 17 to 32 in tall, with the head at least 1 in below the top edge of the seat. It installs on its LATCH base or with a vehicle belt. Doona does not publish an expiry period.

My take on the Doona X Car Seat & Stroller

The Doona X suits a parent who wants the car seat and stroller to be one object, and who rarely needs a full-size stroller. The trade-off is weight: Doona lists the X at 19.6 lb, and you lift all of it, plus the child, in and out of the car. Compared with the Doona +, the X adds three stroller recline positions and a headrest that moves the harness without rethreading, but it cannot be installed with a lap-only belt in a car.

How the Doona X Car Seat & Stroller installs

Lower anchors: LATCH base included. Check your vehicle manual for which seating positions have anchors, and switch to the seat belt once the child passes the anchor weight limit in the manual.
Recline: No recline in car seat mode. The recline angle is what keeps a young baby’s airway open, so set it before tightening the install.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

At 17.3 in at its widest, this seat is one of the narrower ones in its class and is a candidate for three across in many mid-size cars. It weighs 19.6 lb, which matters if you will move it between cars or carry it through an airport.

Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.

What to know before you live with it

Installing it with and without the base

The manual covers baseless installs only and sends you to the separate Doona X Base guide for the base. Without the base, the handle must be in position C. The preferred method is the European routing: the lap belt goes through the lap belt guides on both sides of the handle, then the shoulder belt wraps around the back through the shoulder belt guide. If the shoulder belt is too short, or the belt is an inflatable Ford or Lincoln belt, use the standard routing between the handle and the vehicle seat back. The red level line must be parallel to the ground, and the seat should not move more than 1 in. Lap-only vehicle belts are not allowed.

Harness, headrest and the infant insert

You raise or lower the shoulder straps by pulling the headrest strap and sliding the headrest until the straps sit at or just below the shoulders. The manual requires the infant insert when the baby weighs below 11 lb, or when the shoulders sit below the lowest strap level without it. With the insert, the headrest goes to its lowest position and the insert snaps to it. The chest clip sits at armpit level. The manual also asks you to check that the headrest is fixed and cannot slide between positions.

Stroller mode, handle positions and folding

The handle has three rotation positions: C for a vehicle or aircraft, B for carrying, and A for storage. In stroller mode it extends, and an extended handle cannot rotate. Recline works only in stroller mode, with Seat, Relax and Lean Back positions. One brake pedal next to the right rear wheel locks both rear wheels, and the manual says to use it whenever the child goes in or out. Folding the wheels away needs the brake on, the handle retracted and in position B, the red safety lock pressed and the release lever squeezed while you lean the seat on the locked wheel.

Washing the fabrics

The sunshade comes off by unsnapping it from the canopy hinges, unzipping it from the seat back and pulling 2 snaps from the backrest cover. The headrest cover and shoulder pads come off by their snaps, the backrest cover unzips once the seat is in Lean Back, and the leg rest cover unhooks from velcro and two snaps. Covers, sunshade and shoulder pads go in the machine on cold with mild detergent, then hang dry. No bleach, tumble drying, wringing, ironing or dry cleaning. The harness, buckle and adjuster are wiped with a damp cloth or rinsed in warm water only, and the seat must not be used without its covers.

How much does the Doona X weigh, and how big is it?

Doona lists the seat at 19.6 lb and the LATCH base at 17.2 lb. Unfolded it measures (width x length x height) 17.3 x 35.2 x 38.6/41.5 in, and folded 17.3 x 28.5 x 18 in.

Can I use the Doona X on a plane?

Yes. The manual says the seat is certified for aircraft and may be used only with a lap belt (2-point), with the handle in position C. The Doona X Base must not be used on an aircraft, and the manual asks you to contact the airline in advance.

Does the Doona X recline in the car?

No. Doona's page says the X cannot be reclined in car seat mode. Its three recline positions work only as a stroller, with full recline up to 159°.

What if the Doona X does not fit my vehicle seat?

The manual suggests trying a different seating position or the Doona X base. It also says you can remove the rear stroller wheels with the wheel release button when using it as a car seat.

How is the Doona X different from the Doona +?

Both take babies from 4 to 30 lb. Doona lists the Doona + at 17.2 lb and 17.4 in wide with a 10.4 lb base, lists no stroller recline positions for it, and says it is certified to FMVSS 213A while the X is certified to 213B.
