My take on the Doona + Car Seat & Stroller

The Doona + suits a parent who wants one piece of gear for the car, short walks, buses and flights. The trade-off is that the whole seat, at 17.2 lb listed, comes in and out of the car with the child. Compared with the newer Doona X, the + is listed lighter and can be installed with a lap-only belt, but the harness height is changed by rethreading through slots, and Doona lists no stroller recline for it.

What to know before you live with it

Three baseless installs, plus the base

The manual does not cover the base and points to the Doona Base guide. Without it, the handle goes in position C and the red level line must be parallel to the ground. The preferred European routing runs the lap belt through the guides on both sides of the handle and wraps the shoulder belt around the back through the shoulder belt guide. The standard routing, for short or inflatable belts, passes the shoulder belt between the handle and the seat back. A lap-only belt is allowed in seats without a shoulder belt and on aircraft. The belt must lock, or you need a locking clip, and the seat should not move more than 1 in.

Rethreading the harness as the baby grows

The shoulder straps run through slots at or just below the shoulders. To move them, you take the child out, unhook the straps from the metal harness plate at the back, pull them through and rethread both at the same height, through matching slots in the pad and the shell. The manual is strict that the straps and plate must sit between the metal bar and the seat body, with nothing in front of the bar. The infant insert is required below 11 lb, or while the shoulders sit below the lowest slots, and Doona strongly recommends keeping the head support in after the insert comes out.

Handle positions, brakes and switching modes

The handle locks in A (storage, or out of the way while you put the child in or take them out), B (carrying) and C (in the vehicle). In stroller mode the manual uses position D for open spaces and B for tight or crowded spaces. The handle extends or retracts only in position C. A red pedal by the right rear wheel locks both rear wheels and a green pedal by the left releases them. To fold the wheels away, you lock the brakes, retract the handle, rotate it to B, block a rear wheel with your foot, press the red safety lock, squeeze the wheel release and lean the seat onto that wheel until the legs fold. The manual says to practice mode changes with the seat empty first.

Removing and washing the seat pad

The seat pad is one piece. You loosen and unhook the harness from the metal plate, pull the straps out, release the pad from 4 hooks behind the head area and snap out its pins before lifting it off around the buckle and adjuster button. Refitting reverses the steps and ends with rethreading the harness. The pad, sunshade and shoulder pads are machine washed cold with mild detergent and hung to dry, with no bleach, tumble drying, wringing, ironing or dry cleaning. The harness is only wiped or rinsed in warm water.

Is the Doona + approved for airplanes?

Yes. The manual certifies it for motor vehicles and aircraft and allows it only on a plane seat with a 2-point belt, using the lap belt routing. The Doona Base must not be used on an aircraft.

Can I install the Doona + with only a lap belt in my car?

Yes, in a seat without a shoulder belt. The lap belt goes through both guides on the handle and must lock, otherwise you need a locking clip. The manual lists the European lap-shoulder routing as the preferred method.

When does my baby need the infant insert?

Always below 11 lb, or while the shoulders sit below the lowest shoulder strap slots without the insert. Remove it once the shoulders are above those slots, and keep using the head support.

How is the Doona + different from the Doona X?

Doona lists the X for babies up to 30 lb and 17 to 32 in, at 19.6 lb with a 17.2 lb base, with three stroller recline positions and an adjustable headrest. Doona says the X is certified to FMVSS 213B and the + to 213A.
