Car seats for a 4 year old

Most four year olds are still inside the harness limits of the seat they already have, and that harness is the stronger restraint. A booster is the next step only once the harness is outgrown by weight or height and the child meets the booster's own minimum weight, height and age, and can sit correctly for a whole ride.

How long can a toddler stay rear-facing?

Longer than most people expect, because the rear-facing limit belongs to the seat rather than the child’s age. In this catalogue:

What car seat should a 4 year old be in?

Usually the forward-facing harness seat they are already in, used until its published weight or height limit is reached. Some four year olds are still within a rear-facing limit, which is stronger again. A booster only becomes the answer once the harness is genuinely outgrown.

Can a 4 year old use a booster seat?

Only if the booster's own minimums allow it and the harness is outgrown. Of the booster modes in this catalogue that publish a minimum age, some start at 4 years and others require 5, and every one of them sets a minimum weight and height as well. Meeting the minimum is permission, not a recommendation to move.

High-back or backless booster for a 4 year old?

A high-back booster at this age. It positions the shoulder belt with its own guide and adds head support where the vehicle seat back is low, and many backless boosters set a higher minimum weight or height than a four year old has reached. Check the specific booster's limits rather than the category.

Is a harness still better at four?

A harness restrains the child at five points and does not depend on them staying still, while a booster depends on the vehicle belt staying correctly positioned for the whole journey. That is why NHTSA advises using the harness until its limits are reached before moving to a booster.

What weight and height does a booster need?
