My take on the RAVA next convertible car seat

The RAVA next suits a family that wants one harnessed seat from birth into the preschool years and will mostly install it with the vehicle belt, which the manual calls the preferred method. The trade-off is that recline can only change by uninstalling the seat. Against the RAVA, Nuna lists 4 rear-facing and 4 forward-facing recline angles instead of a 10-position recline, and the RAVA next manual lists only lap/shoulder belts, while the RAVA manual also allows a lap belt alone.

This seat covers 2 stages, and a child has to meet every limit of the stage they are in. Nuna gives it a 10-year life from the date of manufacture, so check the date label before using a hand-me-down.

How the RAVA next convertible car seat installs

Belt lock-off: True tension doors (belt lock-off). A lock-off clamps the vehicle belt so you do not have to switch the belt's retractor into its locked mode.
Lower anchors: Push-on lower anchor connectors. Check your vehicle manual for which seating positions have anchors, and switch to the seat belt once the child passes the anchor weight limit in the manual.
Recline: 4 rear-facing and 4 forward-facing recline positions. The recline angle is what keeps a young baby’s airway open, so set it before tightening the install.
Harness: No-rethread 5-point harness. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

What to know before you live with it

Rear-facing installation

Store the tether, then move the calf support to the use position so it rests against the vehicle seat back. Pick a blue recline position from 1 to 4, and recline more if the baby's head falls forward. Open the rear-facing True Tension door under the seat cover. With the lap/shoulder belt, route it through the blue path under the door, remove slack, lock the belt and close the door. The lower anchor strap uses the same blue path, but not for a child over 35 lb. Never use both methods together, and the tether is not used rear-facing. Holding the seat at the belt path, it should move less than 1 inch.

Forward-facing and the tether

Forward-facing use starts at least at 2 years old, from 30 to 65 lb and 34 to 49 inches. The manual says the tether must always be used forward-facing. Recline positions 1 to 4 (red) are for forward-facing use with the tether; without it, only position 1 is allowed. Fully raise the head support, open the forward-facing True Tension door, and route the lap/shoulder belt through the red path, or use the lower anchor strap up to 40 lb. Attach and tighten the tether. Harness straps go at or just above the shoulders forward-facing. Side impact pods are used only on the door side, and not at all in a middle seat.

Inserts, headrest and crotch buckle

The infant insert must be used for a child weighing 5 to 11 lb and must not be used otherwise. The SIP insert must be used up to 40 lb, and the chart adds 43 inches. After that it can come out once the child no longer fits comfortably between its sides. The harness buckle goes in the inner position when either insert is used. Rear-facing, the head support is set so the harness is at or just below the shoulders, with its bottom close to the shoulders but not pressing on them. The crotch belt has two positions.

Cleaning and the harness adjuster

The seat cover, harness pads, SIP insert and infant insert are cleaned according to the tag on the seat cover, and air dried. The SIP insert pads and the infant insert support wedge are spot clean only. The harness cannot be removed. It is hand washed with a sponge and warm soapy water. The shell takes a damp sponge, and the buckle a damp cloth. No bleach, harsh chemicals, lubricants, ironing, steam or pressure washing. The manual also has a harness function test. If the harness loosens when you pull it, you remove two Phillips screws and clean the adjuster teeth with the included brush.

Is the RAVA next convertible car seat recalled?

24C002000: does not cover this model. Campaign 24C002 covers Rava seats with a plastic harness adjuster button built July 16, 2016 to October 25, 2023. The Part 573 report lists the involved model numbers as CS-50, CS05101, CS05103, CS05104, CS05105, CS05106, CS05107, CS05109, CS05110, CS05111, CS05114 and CS05115, and states that production of the recalled models ended in October 2023. The RAVA next is sold under CS20400 to CS20407 model numbers, none of which are in the recall population. Campaign source (read October 7, 2026).

Each campaign naming this family was read against this model’s numbers and build dates, and none covers it. Still check your seat’s model number and date of manufacture before use, especially on a used seat.

Does the RAVA next fit three across?

Nuna says its slim design fits 3 across in most mid-sized vehicles and lists the width as 19 to 21 inches. I would measure the back seat and the seats beside it before relying on that.

Can the RAVA next be used on an airplane?

Yes. The manual says it is certified for aircraft, rear-facing or forward-facing, with the lap belt over the closed True Tension door. Forward-facing on a plane uses recline position 1 only, because airline seats have no tether anchor.
