Who is the Scenera Extend Convertible Car Seat for?

The Cosco Scenera Extend is a convertible car seat with a 5-point harness. It rides rear-facing from 5 to 40 lb and 19 to 40 in., then forward-facing from 30 to 50 lb and 34.4 to 44 in. It installs with LATCH or a seat belt, is certified for aircraft use and expires 8 years after manufacture.

Reasons to consider it

  • Rear-facing use to 40 lb and 40 in., with two level lines matched to the child's size
  • Air travel, since the manual certifies it for aircraft use rear- and forward-facing
  • Back seats with several passengers, as Cosco says it fits 3 across in most vehicles
  • LATCH that Cosco says may be used for the entire life of the seat

Things to weigh up

  • The forward-facing harness ends at 50 lb or 44 in., and there is no booster mode
  • Changing harness height means rethreading the straps through one of 5 shoulder slots
  • The seat pad comes off only after the harness system is removed
  • Cosco does not publish the seat's weight or width, and the manual limits its use to 8 years from manufacture

My take on the Scenera Extend Convertible Car Seat

The Scenera Extend suits a family that wants a plain harnessed seat for the rear-facing years and a few forward-facing years, especially for travel, since it is certified for aircraft use in both directions. The trade-off is a short forward-facing range and manual rethreading: the harness tops out at 50 lb and 44 in., and changing strap height means moving the straps between 5 shoulder slots. The closest sibling, the Entrada, keeps the same rear-facing limits but lists a forward-facing harness range of 30 to 65 lb and an adjustable 5-position headrest.

Who the Scenera Extend Convertible Car Seat fits

This seat covers 2 stages, and a child has to meet every limit of the stage they are in. Cosco gives it a 8-year life from the date of manufacture, so check the date label before using a hand-me-down.

Forward-facing harness30 to 50 lb · 34.4 to 44 in
The child faces forward in the seat’s own harness. Use the top tether every time, and stay in the harness until the child outgrows it.

How the Scenera Extend Convertible Car Seat installs

Lower anchors
LATCH equipped. Check your vehicle manual for which seating positions have anchors, and switch to the seat belt once the child passes the anchor weight limit in the manual.
Harness
5-point harness. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

Cosco does not publish a width for this seat, so measure your back seat and compare it with the seat in a store before buying.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Certified for aircraft use, so it can travel as a seat rather than checked baggage.

What to know before you live with it

Installing it rear-facing and forward-facing

The manual gives two installation choices in each direction: the lower anchor belt or the vehicle seat belt, never both together. Rear-facing, the tether stays clipped to its storage point and the seat must sit flat. Behind the driver or passenger seat, it must touch the back of that seat or be as close as possible. Use the bottom level line for children 5 to 30 lb and 19 to 34.3 in., and the top line for 30 to 40 lb and 34.4 to 40 in. who can sit up unassisted. A tightly rolled towel or foam pool noodle may be used to reach the line. Forward-facing, the tether must be attached whenever anchors are available.

Harness height and buckle slots

Harness height is set by moving the straps between the shoulder harness slots. To change it, you fully loosen the straps, unhook the strap loops from the splitter plate at the back, pull the straps out and rethread them into the correct shoulder slots. Rear-facing, the straps must be at or slightly below the shoulders and the top of the head at least 1 in. below the top of the seat. Forward-facing, the straps go at or slightly above the shoulders and the ears must be below the top of the seat. The buckle has 3 slots, but only the 1st or 2nd may be used rear-facing. The manual also has a section on adjusting the buckle strap and harness length for smaller infants.

Cleaning the pad and cup holder

The manual says you must remove the harness system to take the pad off the shell, and to remove the harness only for cleaning the pad. The pad is machine washed separately in cold water on a gentle cycle, with no bleach, then tumble dried separately for 10 to 12 minutes on low heat and removed immediately. The manual says to spot clean with warm sudsy water and a damp cloth, and to check the harness straps often for wear or damage. The cup holder attaches to either side of the shell and is dishwasher safe. The manual warns that spilled food and liquids may lead to mold or bacterial growth over time.

Using it on a plane

The manual certifies this seat for aircraft use and points to an airplane certification label on the side of the seat, which some airlines may ask to see. Install it in a window seat so it does not block the aisle, and only on forward facing aircraft seats. Rear-facing, follow the vehicle belt steps. Forward-facing, follow the vehicle belt steps but skip the tether. The lower anchor belt and tether must be stored when you install it with an aircraft belt. If the lap belt is too short, ask the flight attendant for a belt extender, and check the airline's own policy first.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect; Cosco lists 4 colors of this seat.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Cosco so you hear about the next one.
