The manual describes 2 positions. Rear-facing and forward-facing harness use the reclined position, which you get by pulling the booster kickstand down and folding it under the seat. Booster mode uses the upright position: press the round tab on the side, rotate the kickstand outward and push it up to lock it. Rear-facing, the Rear-Facing Level Line must be parallel with the ground for a child who cannot sit up unassisted. Only if necessary, a tightly rolled towel or foam pool noodle may go under the front of the seat. Check often that the padding is still there and the belt is tight.
In both harness modes the seat installs with the lower anchor belt or the vehicle belt, not both. Rear-facing, the tether stays stored, and in the driver or passenger side positions the seat must touch the back of the seat in front of it, or be as close as possible. Forward-facing, you must always attach the tether when anchors are available. The manual says not to use the lower anchors for a child weighing more than 55 lb, and to install with the vehicle belt plus tether above that, up to the 65 lb harness limit. A correct installation moves no more than 1 in. side to side at the belt path.
Before using the booster mode you must store the harness system and remove the accessories, except the cup holders. LATCH is not used, and the lap belt alone is never enough. The lap belt goes through the booster belt path, low across the hips. The shoulder belt runs through the guide in the headrest and across the center of the shoulder and the chest. The vehicle seat back must be upright, with the kickstand and front of the seat flat on the vehicle seat. The child's ears must not be above the top of the headrest, and the head must be at least 5 in. below the vehicle roof. Keep it belted when empty.
