Who is the TriRide 3-in-1 Car Seat for?

The Graco TriRide 3-in-1 is an all-in-one seat used rear-facing from 5 to 40 lb, forward-facing with the harness from 26.5 to 65 lb up to 49 in, and as a highback booster from 40 to 100 lb and 43 to 57 in from age 4. It has 6 recline positions and expires 10 years after manufacture.

Reasons to consider it

  • 6 recline positions, three of them for rear-facing
  • Harness to 65 lb and 49 in, then a highback booster to 100 lb
  • A harness storage compartment, so the harness stays in the seat in booster mode
  • Certified for aircraft use with the harness

Things to weigh up

  • Over 40 lb forward-facing, the manual requires recline position 5
  • Lower anchors are not for a child over 45 lb
  • LATCH in booster mode only where the vehicle manufacturer allows it
  • Not certified for aircraft in booster mode

My take on the TriRide 3-in-1 Car Seat

It suits a family that wants three modes in one seat with standard LATCH and a wide choice of recline settings. Graco lists it at 19 in wide, 20 in deep and 18.45 lb. The TrioGrow SnugLock shares those limits, and the difference is the belt install: the TriRide manual has you lock the vehicle belt at its retractor, where the TrioGrow clamps it under a SnugLock lock-off.

Who the TriRide 3-in-1 Car Seat fits

This seat covers 3 stages, and a child has to meet every limit of the stage they are in. Graco gives it a 10-year life from the date of manufacture, so check the date label before using a hand-me-down.

Rear-facing harness5 to 40 lb
The child faces the back of the car, which keeps the head, neck and spine supported in a frontal crash. Keep this mode as long as the child fits it.
Forward-facing harness26.5 to 65 lb · Up to 49 in
The child faces forward in the seat’s own harness. Use the top tether every time, and stay in the harness until the child outgrows it.
High-back booster40 to 100 lb · 43 to 57 in · from 4 years
The seat’s own back and belt guide route the vehicle belt across the shoulder, and the sides give the child something to lean on when they sleep.

How the TriRide 3-in-1 Car Seat installs

Lower anchors
LATCH equipped. Check your vehicle manual for which seating positions have anchors, and switch to the seat belt once the child passes the anchor weight limit in the manual.
Recline
6 recline positions. The recline angle is what keeps a young baby’s airway open, so set it before tightening the install.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

At 19 in at its widest, measure your back seat before counting on three across. It weighs 18.45 lb, which matters if you will move it between cars or carry it through an airport.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Aircraft certification is printed on the seat’s own label; check before you fly.

What to know before you live with it

Recline and rear-facing installation

Rear-facing, you pull the handle on the front and choose one of the three rear-facing recline positions, then route the lower anchor strap or vehicle belt through the belt path with the blue label. The red level line on the side of the seat must be level with the ground, and you recheck it with the child in the seat. Graco recommends at least 80% of the base on the vehicle seat. The child's head must be at least 1 in below the headrest adjustment handle. Never install it rear-facing in front of an active air bag.

Forward-facing and booster setup

Forward-facing uses the orange belt path and recline position 4 or 5; for children over 40 lb you must use position 5. Do not use the lower anchors for a child over 45 lb; switch to the vehicle belt with the tether. In highback booster mode the harness goes into a storage compartment, the seat sits in recline position 6, and the base must rest completely on the vehicle seat. LATCH may hold the booster in place up to 100 lb only if the vehicle manufacturer allows it, and the lap and shoulder belt always holds the child.

Cleaning the TriRide

The head support cover comes off after you undo the elastic loops behind it and inside each shoulder belt guide. The seat pad releases from snaps, elastic loops and the fabric below each cup holder, and the side pad from snaps, armrest fabric and the fabric below each lap belt guide. Machine wash the pads in cold water on a delicate cycle and drip-dry, without bleach. The harness, lower anchor and tether webbing is surface wash only. Clean the buckle in warm water without soap, then check that it fastens with a click.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect; Graco lists 3 colors of this seat.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Graco so you hear about the next one.
