Who is the SlimFit 3-in-1 Car Seat for?

The Graco SlimFit 3-in-1 is an all-in-one seat used rear-facing from 5 to 40 lb, forward-facing with the harness from 26.5 to 65 lb up to 49 in, and as a highback booster from 40 to 100 lb and 43 to 57 in for children at least 4. It expires 10 years after manufacture.

Reasons to consider it

  • Three modes, from 5 lb rear-facing to a 100 lb highback booster
  • Rotating cup holders that Graco says make the seat 10% slimmer
  • Push-button InRight LATCH connectors and a 10-position headrest that moves with the harness
  • Certified for aircraft use with the harness

Things to weigh up

  • Lower anchors are not for a child over 45 lb forward-facing; above that, use the vehicle belt and tether
  • Belt installs rely on locking the vehicle belt; Graco's comparison lists a belt lock-off only on the SlimFit3 LX
  • Lower anchors can only be used when the vehicle anchors are 11 in apart, center to center
  • Not certified for aircraft in booster mode

My take on the SlimFit 3-in-1 Car Seat

It suits a family that wants one seat from the newborn stage to the booster in a back seat where width matters. Graco lists it at 19.9 in wide and says the cup holders rotate away to make it 10% slimmer. The trade-off is front-to-back room, since Graco lists it at 21.5 in deep. The SlimFit LX has the same limits and dimensions but adds myPocket storage and a Rapid Remove cover, and Graco lists it at 21.5 lb against 19.47 lb for this seat.

Who the SlimFit 3-in-1 Car Seat fits

This seat covers 3 stages, and a child has to meet every limit of the stage they are in. Graco gives it a 10-year life from the date of manufacture, so check the date label before using a hand-me-down.

Rear-facing harness5 to 40 lb
The child faces the back of the car, which keeps the head, neck and spine supported in a frontal crash. Keep this mode as long as the child fits it.
Forward-facing harness26.5 to 65 lb · Up to 49 in
The child faces forward in the seat’s own harness. Use the top tether every time, and stay in the harness until the child outgrows it.
High-back booster40 to 100 lb · 43 to 57 in · from 4 years
The seat’s own back and belt guide route the vehicle belt across the shoulder, and the sides give the child something to lean on when they sleep.

How the SlimFit 3-in-1 Car Seat installs

Lower anchors
InRight LATCH. Check your vehicle manual for which seating positions have anchors, and switch to the seat belt once the child passes the anchor weight limit in the manual.
Recline
4 recline positions. The recline angle is what keeps a young baby’s airway open, so set it before tightening the install.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

At 19.9 in at its widest, measure your back seat before counting on three across. It weighs 19.47 lb, which matters if you will move it between cars or carry it through an airport.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Aircraft certification is printed on the seat’s own label; check before you fly.

What to know before you live with it

Installing it rear-facing and forward-facing

Rear-facing, the lower anchor strap or vehicle belt goes through the belt path with the blue label, the seat sits in recline position 1 or 2, and the ball in the level indicator must be completely in the blue zone with the vehicle on level ground. Rolled towels at the seat crease may help. At least 80% of the base must be on the vehicle seat. Forward-facing uses the orange belt path, recline position 3 or 4 and the top tether. Lower anchors are not for a child over 45 lb, and the vehicle anchors must be 11 in apart, center to center. The seat should move less than 1 in at the belt path.

Harness, headrest and infant inserts

The headrest and harness move together when you squeeze the adjustment handle. Rear-facing, the straps sit at or just below the shoulders and the top of the head must be at least 1 in below the handle. Forward-facing, the straps sit at or just above the shoulders and the top of the ears must be below the top of the headrest. The buckle strap has three slots; use the one closest to the child without being under them. A snug harness passes the pinch test at the shoulder. The infant head support and body support are only for children under 20 lb.

Switching to booster mode

For the booster, the harness, chest clip, buckle and buckle tongues go into a storage compartment under the lower seat pad, so nothing leaves the seat. The seat goes in recline position 4. The vehicle lap belt runs behind the armrests through the green belt path, and the shoulder belt goes through the guide in the headrest. Never use a lap-only belt. The front of the base must not hang over the vehicle seat. LATCH may hold the booster in place up to 100 lb, but the vehicle belt still holds the child, and the seat must stay secured even when empty.

Cleaning and useful life

The headrest pad, lower seat pad and side pad come off with snaps, elastic straps, pins and plastic tabs. Machine wash them in cold water on a delicate cycle and drip-dry, without bleach. The harness, lower anchor and tether straps are surface wash only with mild soap; do not immerse them. Clean the buckle by agitating it in warm water and pressing the red button, without soap or lubricant, and do not submerge the buckle strap. Stop using the seat 10 years after the date of manufacture, shown on a label on the back.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect; Graco lists 4 colors of this seat.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Graco so you hear about the next one.
