Who is the Grows4Me 4-in-1 Car Seat for?

The Graco Grows4Me 4-in-1 is an all-in-one seat used rear-facing from 5 to 40 lb, forward-facing with the harness from 26.5 to 65 lb, as a high-back booster from 40 to 100 lb and as a backless booster from 40 to 110 lb. Graco says to stop using it 10 years after manufacture.

Reasons to consider it

  • Four modes, from 5 lb rear-facing to 110 lb backless
  • LATCH may hold the seat in booster mode up to 100 lb
  • Certified for aircraft with the internal harness
  • Seat pads machine wash on a cold delicate cycle

Things to weigh up

  • Starts at 5 lb rear-facing, not 4 lb like the 4Ever DLX
  • The backless booster ends at 110 lb
  • No belt lock-off in the manual; the vehicle belt is locked at its retractor
  • The infant body support is only for children 20 lb or less

My take on the Grows4Me 4-in-1 Car Seat

It suits a family that wants four modes with fewer installation features than the 4Ever DLX. The manual uses lower anchor hooks and describes no belt lock-off, and its limits are slightly lower: a 5 lb rear-facing minimum and 110 lb in backless mode. Graco lists both seats at 21.5 in wide, with the Grows4Me at 22.5 lb and the DLX at 23 lb.

Who the Grows4Me 4-in-1 Car Seat fits

This seat covers 4 stages, and a child has to meet every limit of the stage they are in. Graco gives it a 10-year life from the date of manufacture, so check the date label before using a hand-me-down.

Rear-facing harness5 to 40 lb
The child faces the back of the car, which keeps the head, neck and spine supported in a frontal crash. Keep this mode as long as the child fits it.
Forward-facing harness26.5 to 65 lb · Up to 49 in
The child faces forward in the seat’s own harness. Use the top tether every time, and stay in the harness until the child outgrows it.
High-back booster40 to 100 lb · 43 to 57 in · from 4 years
The seat’s own back and belt guide route the vehicle belt across the shoulder, and the sides give the child something to lean on when they sleep.
Backless booster40 to 110 lb · 43 to 57 in · from 4 years
Only the base is left, so the vehicle seat has to support the child’s back and head, and the belt guide sits at the hip.

How the Grows4Me 4-in-1 Car Seat installs

Lower anchors
LATCH equipped. Check your vehicle manual for which seating positions have anchors, and switch to the seat belt once the child passes the anchor weight limit in the manual.
Recline
6 recline positions. The recline angle is what keeps a young baby’s airway open, so set it before tightening the install.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

At 21.5 in at its widest, measure your back seat before counting on three across. It weighs 22.5 lb, which matters if you will move it between cars or carry it through an airport.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Aircraft certification is printed on the seat’s own label; check before you fly.

What to know before you live with it

Installing with LATCH or the seat belt

The seat installs with the lower anchor strap or the vehicle belt, not both. Rear-facing uses recline position 1, 2 or 3 and the belt path with the blue label. Forward-facing uses position 4, 5 or 6 and the path with the orange label, plus the tether. The lower anchor hooks clip to the vehicle anchors, and are stored on plastic bars when you use the belt. With the vehicle belt, you lock it by pulling the shoulder belt all the way out and letting it retract. The base must be at least 80% on the vehicle seat, and the seat must move less than 1 in.

Harness, recline and the body support

Rear-facing is for 5 to 40 lb and 49 in or less, with the head at least 1 in below the headrest adjustment handle. Children under 26.5 lb must ride rear-facing. Forward-facing, children 40 lb or less use recline position 4 or 5, and heavier children position 6. LATCH is not used forward-facing for a child over 45 lb. The infant body support is rear-facing only, for 20 lb or less, and must be used if the shoulders are below the lowest harness setting. It must never bunch or fold behind the child.

Boosters, flying and cleaning

Both booster modes need a child 43 to 57 in tall and at least 4 years old, held by the vehicle lap and shoulder belt. LATCH may also hold the seat in booster mode up to 100 lb. The seat is certified for aircraft only with the internal harness, and the manual says to lower the headrest when checking it at the airport. The headrest pad unsnaps from the shell, and the seat pad comes off with snaps, elastic straps and an armrest tab. Both machine wash cold on a delicate cycle and drip-dry, with no bleach.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Graco so you hear about the next one.
