Who is the Disney Baby Grow and Go All-in-One Convertible Car Seat (CC253) for?

The Disney Baby Grow and Go (CC253) is an all-in-one seat. The manual lists rear-facing from 5 to 40 lb and 19 to 40 in., forward-facing with the harness from 30 to 65 lb and 34.4 to 49 in., and booster use from 40 to 100 lb and 43.4 to 52 in. It expires 10 years after manufacture.

Reasons to consider it

  • Three modes in one shell, from 5 lb rear-facing to 100 lb as a booster
  • QuickFit headrest and harness adjust together in one step, with no rethreading
  • Harness holders keep the straps open in rear-facing and forward-facing modes
  • The seat pad comes off without removing the harness and is machine washable

Things to weigh up

  • This manual allows the lower anchors only up to 40 lb; above that, the vehicle belt is required
  • Certified for aircraft only with the internal harness, not as a booster
  • Safety 1st does not publish a width or seat weight for CC253
  • The head and body pillows are rear-facing only and must be used together

My take on the Disney Baby Grow and Go All-in-One Convertible Car Seat (CC253)

It suits a family that wants one seat from the newborn stage to booster use, with a Disney cover. The main trade-off is the lower anchor limit in this manual: above 40 lb the seat must be installed with the vehicle belt, plus the tether when forward-facing. Safety 1st lists the standard Grow and Go (CC409) with the same three ranges, but I would follow the CC253 manual for its own anchor limit rather than another Grow and Go guide.

Who the Disney Baby Grow and Go All-in-One Convertible Car Seat (CC253) fits

This seat covers 3 stages, and a child has to meet every limit of the stage they are in. Safety 1st gives it a 10-year life from the date of manufacture, so check the date label before using a hand-me-down.

Rear-facing harness5 to 40 lb · 19 to 40 in
The child faces the back of the car, which keeps the head, neck and spine supported in a frontal crash. Keep this mode as long as the child fits it.
Forward-facing harness30 to 65 lb · 34.4 to 49 in
The child faces forward in the seat’s own harness. Use the top tether every time, and stay in the harness until the child outgrows it.
Belt-positioning booster (high-back)40 to 100 lb · 43.4 to 52 in
The seat’s own back and belt guide route the vehicle belt across the shoulder, and the sides give the child something to lean on when they sleep.

How the Disney Baby Grow and Go All-in-One Convertible Car Seat (CC253) installs

Recline
3 recline positions. The recline angle is what keeps a young baby’s airway open, so set it before tightening the install.
Harness
QuickFit no-rethread headrest/harness. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

Safety 1st does not publish a width for this seat, so measure your back seat and compare it with the seat in a store before buying.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Certified for aircraft use, so it can travel as a seat rather than checked baggage.

What to know before you live with it

Rear-facing installation and recline

The manual gives two rear-facing methods, the lower anchor belt or the vehicle belt, never both at once. The belt goes under the seat pad, across the seat, in front of the buckle and out the other side of the rear-facing belt path. The tether stays stored rear-facing. For a child who cannot sit up unassisted, the Rear-Facing Level Line must be parallel with the ground in recline Position 3 or 2. A child who can sit up may ride more upright in Position 2. Behind a front seat, the car seat must touch that seat back or be as close as possible, and it should not move more than 1 in. at the belt path.

Forward-facing and the 40 lb anchor limit

Forward-facing use starts only once the child has outgrown rear-facing, and lasts until 65 lb, 49 in., or the fit checks fail. The tops of the ears must stay below the top of the headrest. The harness straps must be at or slightly above the shoulders. The manual says not to use the lower anchors for a child over 40 lb; the vehicle lap or lap/shoulder belt is used from there to 65 lb. When an anchor is available, the tether must always be attached and tightened. The seat goes in Position 1, upright, and Position 2 only if that is needed to sit flush against the vehicle seat back.

Smaller babies, pillows and washing

For smaller infants the manual describes lower shoulder harness slots. Using them requires the head and body pillow, and the headrest must be in its lowest position. The pad comes off without removing the harness, but the straps must stay threaded in the hip slots, because the manual says they cannot be rethreaded if pulled out. Wash the pad and accessories separately in cold water on a gentle cycle with the harness cover fastening strips closed, no bleach, then tumble dry separately for 10 to 12 minutes on low heat. Spot clean the harness straps and buckle. The cup holders are top-rack dishwasher safe.

Booster mode, flying and expiry

In booster mode the buckle is removed and the chest clip, harness straps and buckle tongues are placed behind the headrest. Only the vehicle lap and shoulder belt holds the child, and the lower anchor belt and tether stay stored. The shoulder belt runs through the guide in the headrest. The manual says not to use the booster if the child's head is less than 5 in. below the vehicle roof. On aircraft the seat is certified only with the internal harness, on a forward-facing aircraft seat, and a window seat is recommended. It must not be used more than 10 years after the date of manufacture.

Answers refer to the model and manual version on this page. Check the instructions supplied with your seat.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Safety 1st so you hear about the next one.
