Who is the Grow and Go All-in-One Convertible Car Seat for?

The Grow and Go (CC409) is a non-rotating all-in-one seat: rear-facing harness for 5 to 40 lb and 19 to 40 in., forward-facing harness for 30 to 65 lb and 34.4 to 49 in., and booster for 40 to 100 lb and 43.4 to 52 in. It is aircraft certified with the harness and expires after 10 years.

Reasons to consider it

  • Certified for aircraft use with the internal harness, according to the manual
  • QuickFit headrest and harness that adjust together without rethreading
  • A seat pad that snaps off without removing the harness and is machine washable
  • Lower anchors usable up to 55 lb in forward-facing mode

Things to weigh up

  • Not certified for aircraft use as a booster, because aircraft seats have no shoulder belts
  • Only 3 recline positions, with Position 1 not used rear-facing
  • Head and body pillows are required with the lower shoulder harness slots
  • No published seat weight or width

My take on the Grow and Go All-in-One Convertible Car Seat

The Grow and Go suits a family that wants one seat from newborn to booster without paying for rotation, and may fly with it in harness mode. The trade-off is a simpler seat with 3 recline positions, installed through a different belt path rear-facing and forward-facing. The Turn and Go 360 lists the same limits but rotates and has 5 recline positions.

Who the Grow and Go All-in-One Convertible Car Seat fits

This seat covers 3 stages, and a child has to meet every limit of the stage they are in. Safety 1st gives it a 10-year life from the date of manufacture, so check the date label before using a hand-me-down.

Rear-facing harness5 to 40 lb · 19 to 40 in
The child faces the back of the car, which keeps the head, neck and spine supported in a frontal crash. Keep this mode as long as the child fits it.
Forward-facing harness30 to 65 lb · 34.4 to 49 in
The child faces forward in the seat’s own harness. Use the top tether every time, and stay in the harness until the child outgrows it.
Belt-positioning booster (high-back)40 to 100 lb · 43.4 to 52 in
The seat’s own back and belt guide route the vehicle belt across the shoulder, and the sides give the child something to lean on when they sleep.

How the Grow and Go All-in-One Convertible Car Seat installs

Recline
3 recline positions. The recline angle is what keeps a young baby’s airway open, so set it before tightening the install.
Harness
QuickFit no-rethread headrest/harness. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

Safety 1st does not publish a width for this seat, so measure your back seat and compare it with the seat in a store before buying.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Certified for aircraft use, so it can travel as a seat rather than checked baggage.

What to know before you live with it

Installing it in each mode

Rear-facing, install with the lower anchor belt or the vehicle belt through the rear-facing belt path, and do not use the tether. Store the tether hook on its storage attachment. Forward-facing, attach the tether whenever anchors are available and use the forward-facing belt path. The lower anchors are allowed up to 55 lb; above that, install with the vehicle belt. Do not use both methods at once. If the seat moves more than 1 in. at the belt path, the manual suggests pulling tighter, reinstalling, or trying another position or method. Some vehicle belts need the locking clip.

Recline, pillows and newborn fit

The seat has 3 recline positions. Rear-facing uses Position 3 or 2, and forward-facing and booster use Position 1, fully upright. For children 5 to 30 lb and 19 to 34.3 in., the bottom level line must be parallel with the ground; for 30 to 40 lb and 34.4 to 40 in. who sit up unassisted, use the top line. When using the lower shoulder harness slots for smaller children, the head and body pillows must both be used and the headrest must be in its lowest position. Harness covers are optional and should come off if they stop the chest clip sitting correctly.

Booster mode, flying and washing

As a booster, do not use the harness or LATCH. Store the lower anchor belt and tether, and use only the vehicle lap and shoulder belt. Keep the booster belted even when empty, and stop if the child's ears are above the headrest or the head is less than 5 in. below the roof. On aircraft, use it only with the internal harness, in a window seat, and only on a forward-facing aircraft seat. Wash the pad cold on a gentle cycle with the harness cover strips closed, no bleach, and tumble dry on low for 10 to 12 minutes.

Compared with the Turn and Go 360

The Turn and Go 360 page lists the same three modes and limits: 5 to 40 lb rear-facing, 30 to 65 lb forward-facing and 40 to 100 lb as a booster. The differences are design. The Turn and Go rotates in all three modes on an attached base, has 5 recline positions and a 10-position headrest, and uses tension indicators and a built-in lock-off. The Grow and Go instead has a 3-position recline and a QuickFit harness. Neither page publishes a width.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect; Safety 1st lists 7 colors of this seat.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Safety 1st so you hear about the next one.
