My take on the Pria Max All-in-One Convertible Car Seat

The Pria Max suits parents who want the Pria limits plus the ClipQuik magnetic chest clip and spring-assist harness holders that keep the straps aside while loading the child. The limits and installation are the same as the Pria and Pria Max+, because all three share one manual. If you want a backless mode or more recline positions, the Kani 4-in-1 is the sibling to compare.

Who the Pria Max All-in-One Convertible Car Seat fits

This seat covers 3 stages, and a child has to meet every limit of the stage they are in. Maxi-Cosi gives it a 10-year life from the date of manufacture, so check the date label before using a hand-me-down.

Rear-facing harness5 to 40 lb · 19 to 40 in
The child faces the back of the car, which keeps the head, neck and spine supported in a frontal crash. Keep this mode as long as the child fits it.
Forward-facing harness30 to 65 lb · 34.4 to 49 in
The child faces forward in the seat’s own harness. Use the top tether every time, and stay in the harness until the child outgrows it.
Belt-positioning booster (high-back)40 to 100 lb · 43.4 to 52 in
The seat’s own back and belt guide route the vehicle belt across the shoulder, and the sides give the child something to lean on when they sleep.

How the Pria Max All-in-One Convertible Car Seat installs

Lower anchors
1-click LATCH. Check your vehicle manual for which seating positions have anchors, and switch to the seat belt once the child passes the anchor weight limit in the manual.
Recline
3 recline positions. The recline angle is what keeps a young baby’s airway open, so set it before tightening the install.
Harness
5-position no-rethread headrest/harness. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

Maxi-Cosi does not publish a width for this seat, so measure your back seat and compare it with the seat in a store before buying. It weighs 16.8 lb, which matters if you will move it between cars or carry it through an airport.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Certified for aircraft use, so it can travel as a seat rather than checked baggage.

What to know before you live with it

What the Max adds over the Pria

Maxi-Cosi's Pria Max page lists two extras for getting a child in and out: the ClipQuik magnetic chest clip, which opens with 1 hand, and the Out-of-the-Way spring-assist harness holders. It also lists 3 recline positions, 2 removable dishwasher-safe cup holders, 1-click LATCH and certification for airplane use. The page also says the infant head and lumbar inserts can be removed without rethreading the harness.

Installation and the 50 lb anchor limit

In each direction you use either the vehicle belt or the lower anchor belt, never both. Rear-facing, the tether stays stored and the seat must touch the seat in front or be as close as possible. Forward-facing, the seat is fully upright in Position 1 and the tether must always be used when anchors are available. The lower anchors are not for a child over 50 lb, so a heavier child up to 65 lb needs the vehicle belt. The seat should move no more than 1 in. at the belt path.

Magnetic clip and harness covers

The manual explains how to open the magnetic chest clip by holding both sides and separating the magnet. It also covers the optional harness covers: if they stop the chest clip sitting correctly, or prevent a tight enough harness on a smaller infant, remove them and store them until the child is big enough. The head and body pillows are for rear-facing only and must be used together. With the lower shoulder slots, both pillows are required and the headrest must be at its lowest position.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect; Maxi-Cosi lists 3 colors of this seat.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Maxi-Cosi so you hear about the next one.
