Who is the KeyFit Infant Car Seat for?

The Chicco KeyFit is a rear-facing infant car seat for babies from 4 to 22 lb and 30 inches or less, with the head at least 1 inch below the top of the headrest. The carrier clicks into a base installed with LATCH or a seat belt, can be belted in without the base, and expires after 6 years.

The KeyFit suits a family that wants a carrier that lifts out of a stay-in-car base and clicks into a Chicco stroller. Its 22 lb weight limit is the main trade-off, and the seat is outgrown at whichever limit the baby reaches first. This seat covers one stage. Chicco gives it a 6-year life from the date of manufacture, so check the date label before using a hand-me-down.

How the KeyFit Infant Car Seat installs

Lower anchors: SuperCinch LATCH. Check your vehicle manual for which seating positions have anchors, and switch to the seat belt once the child passes the anchor weight limit in the manual.
Recline: 5 recline positions. The recline angle is what keeps a young baby’s airway open, so set it before tightening the install.
Harness: 3-position headrest/harness height adjust. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

At 16.75 in at its widest, this seat is one of the narrower ones in its class and is a candidate for three across in many mid-size cars. It weighs 9 lb, which matters if you will move it between cars or carry it through an airport.

Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.

What to know before you live with it

Three ways to install, with or without the base

The base installs with LATCH, tightened with the SuperCinch pull strap, or with a vehicle belt routed through the belt path on the side of the base. With a lap-shoulder belt, the shoulder belt goes into the lock-off on the side opposite the buckle, and the manual says not to pull on it after that. A lap-belt-only base installation is also covered. Without the base, the belt runs through the carrier's own seat belt guides and must be locked; a tightly rolled towel may be used to level the carrier. Either way, it should not move more than 1 in at the belt path.

Getting the angle right in the car

Park on level ground, set the base on the vehicle seat, then press both foot adjuster buttons and raise or lower the recline foot until the bubble sits between the arrows. The manual says no more than 4 inches of the base may hang past the edge of the vehicle seat, and the LATCH connectors are only for anchors at the standard 11 inch spacing. It must never face forward, never go on a folded-down or side-facing seat, and never sit in front of a frontal air bag that cannot be turned off.

Harness slots, inserts and the handle

The harness has 3 height slots. To move it, take the baby out, loosen the straps, turn the carrier over, unhook each strap from the splitter plate, and rethread it through the slot at or just below the shoulders. Both straps must sit at the same height. The newborn positioner is only for babies from 4 to 11 lb. The head rest insert can be used with or without it, but never with the harness in the upper slots. The handle has carrying, stationary and rocking positions and must be locked in the carry position before lifting.

Cleaning

The fabrics may be spot-cleaned, hand washed, or machine washed in cold water on a delicate cycle with mild detergent, then hung to dry. The harness is sponge-cleaned with warm water and mild soap and never machine washed. Bleach, solvents and household cleaners are ruled out because they may weaken plastics and straps, and no soap or lubricant goes on the buckle or LATCH hardware. The LATCH straps cannot be replaced. The seat must never be used without its seat pad, and Chicco sends owners to its website or customer service for fabric removal steps.

What are the Chicco KeyFit weight and height limits?

The manual gives 4 to 22 lb and 30 inches or less, and the top of the head must be at least 1 inch below the top of the headrest. It says to stop using the seat as soon as the child reaches either the maximum weight or the maximum height.

How much does the KeyFit carrier weigh?

Chicco lists the carrier at 9 lbs and the base at 7 lbs, with an assembled product weight of 16 lbs. These are manufacturer figures, not my own measurements.

How wide is the Chicco KeyFit?

Chicco lists it at 16.75 in wide, 26.5 in deep and 24 in tall. Inside, it gives 10 in at the shoulders and 10.5 in at the hips.

Can I use the KeyFit on an airplane?

Yes. The manual says it is certified for aircraft use on forward-facing aircraft seats only, installed without the base using the lap belt, as in a car. Chicco suggests asking the airline about its car seat policy before travel.
