How the KeyFit 30 ClearTex Infant Car Seat installs

Lower anchors: SuperCinch LATCH. Check your vehicle manual for which seating positions have anchors, and switch to the seat belt once the child passes the anchor weight limit in the manual.

What to know before you live with it

Base installation and checks

Level the base first: press both foot adjuster buttons and move the recline foot until the bubble is between the arrows. For LATCH, loosen the straps fully, clip both connectors to the anchor bars, and pull up on the pull strap while pressing the base down. For a lap-shoulder belt, route it through the belt path on the side of the base, remove slack, then press the shoulder belt into the lock-off opposite the buckle. A lap-belt-only method is also covered. Do not use LATCH and the seat belt together, and check that the base moves no more than 1 in.

Using the carrier without the base

The carrier can be belted in on its own with a lap-shoulder or lap belt through the seat belt guides on each side. The manual says never to do this with a non-locking vehicle belt, because the installation will not be secure. The level line on the seat label must be level with the ground, and a tightly rolled towel under the front edge may help. The same lap-belt method is used on forward-facing aircraft seats.

Fitting a newborn

The newborn positioner is only for babies from 4 to 11 lb, and the manual says not to add any other positioner or pillow. The head rest insert can be used with or without the positioner but never with the harness in the upper slots. The straps go at or just below the shoulders, the chest clip sits level with the armpits, and the harness is too loose if you can pinch a fold at the shoulder. Premature babies need their doctor's approval before using the seat.

Cleaning the ClearTex fabrics

Chicco describes the seat pad as machine washable. Its care note says to machine wash the fabrics separately in cold water on a delicate cycle with mild detergent, without bleach, and hang them to dry. The harness is spot-cleaned with warm water and mild detergent, air dried and never machine washed. Plastics and hardware are wiped with a damp cloth.
