What to know before you live with it

Installing the base

You lift the carrier off and set the base rear-facing on level ground. Turn the angle knob until the level indicator shows the right angle for your baby's weight. The base installs with its LATCH strap or with a lap or lap and shoulder belt through the color-coded slots. The Right Tight lock-off clip then closes over the strap or belt. The manual warns not to put an inflatable shoulder belt under the lock-off clip. The anti-rebound bar snaps into the base before first use and should be checked by pulling on it. The vehicle's lower anchors are spaced about 11 inches apart.

Using the carrier without the base

The seat is certified with or without the base, but the manual recommends the base and says to go without it only if needed. Without it, the limit is 22 lb. The carrier is placed rear-facing with the handle in the forward-most position, and the line on the side must be level with the ground. The lap belt threads through the slots in the handle and the shoulder belt goes behind the shell into the rear slots. A belt with no locking feature needs a locking clip. On an aircraft, use the lap belt only and never the base.

Harness, pods and hood

The harness plate slides into 6 positions from the back without rethreading. The straps should sit just below the shoulders, and the head should stay at least 1 inch below the top of the seat back. The Dual Stage Cushion System may be used from birth up to about 20 lb. The manual describes Kinetic Pods on the shell: extend the one facing the door completely and never pull out the inner one. The hood opens into a Pagoda hood, and the manual says not to use the hood to lift the seat. For cleaning, wipe plastic parts with a damp cloth and follow the fabric label.
