Who is the onBoard FLX Infant Car Seat for?

The Safety 1st onBoard FLX is a rear-facing-only infant carrier for babies from 4 to 30 lb who are 32 inches or less, with at least 1 inch of headroom. It installs on an adjustable base with a lower anchor belt or seat belt, or belted in without the base, and expires 8 years after manufacture.

Reasons to consider it

  • A carrier Safety 1st lists at under 8 lbs.
  • Four harness heights and a buckle that adjusts for both length and position
  • Certified for aircraft use when installed without the base
  • Fits Safety 1st strollers that feature QuickClick, according to the product page

Things to weigh up

  • Rear-facing only, limited to 30 lb and 32 inches
  • The harness is rethreaded by hand when moving between shoulder slots
  • The base has no tension indicators or built-in lock-off described in the manual
  • Safety 1st does not publish the carrier's width or length

My take on the onBoard FLX Infant Car Seat

The FLX suits parents who want a light carrier (Safety 1st says under 8 lbs.) and a simple base with a lower anchor belt. The trade-off is that the manual describes no tension indicators or belt lock-off on its base, so a seat belt install relies on locking the vehicle belt with a switchable retractor, a locking latch plate or a locking clip. The onBoard Insta-LATCH DLX adds self-retracting connectors and SecureTech red-to-green indicators to its base.

Will it fit your car?

Safety 1st does not publish a width for this seat, so measure your back seat and compare it with the seat in a store before buying.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Certified for aircraft use, so it can travel as a seat rather than checked baggage.

What to know before you live with it

Three ways to install it

The manual describes the base installed with the lower anchor belt or with the vehicle lap or lap/shoulder belt, never both at once, plus a vehicle belt install with no base. The base must not move more than 1 inch at the belt path. If the belt has an emergency locking retractor and a sliding latch plate, a locking clip is required, and the manual says never to use an emergency locking lap-only belt or an inflatable belt. In side positions, the seat must touch the back of the seat in front, or be as close as possible.

Getting the recline right

The carrier has a rear-facing level line, and the base has a foot that lowers or stores with a release button. The manual says to redo the installation if the base is not reclined correctly. If the child cannot sit up unassisted, the seat may be installed slightly more reclined than the level line shows. Only if necessary, a tightly rolled towel or foam pool noodle may go under the front of the base, and the manual asks you to check often that the padding is still in place and the belt is tight.

Fitting a small newborn

The harness straps must sit at or slightly below the shoulders, never above, and the buckle goes in the slot closest to the child. If you cannot get a snug harness, the manual shows how to shorten the buckle strap through the middle slot and how to change the harness strap length. Head and body pillows (on select models) must be used together and must not cover the face. Harness covers should be removed if they prevent proper chest clip position or a tight enough fit for a smaller baby.

Cleaning the fabrics

The seat pad and accessories are machine washed separately in cold water on a gentle cycle, without bleach, then tumble dried separately for 10 to 12 minutes on low heat and removed immediately. Harness straps, the buckle and the shell are spot cleaned with warm sudsy water and a damp cloth, and the buckle must not be submerged. The canopy is hand washed and line dried. The manual warns never to use the seat without its pad or with damaged harness straps.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect; Safety 1st lists 4 colors of this seat.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Safety 1st so you hear about the next one.
