The base has one release lever with two jobs. Lifting it opens the lock-off and releases the LATCH lower anchor belts. Pushing it down closes the lock-off and lets the LATCH belts retract. For a LATCH install, you attach the connectors, push the lever down, then push down on the base so the belts retract and tighten. For a vehicle belt install, you route the belt through the base, lock it with the retractor if it is switchable, tighten, then close the lever. If the lock-off cannot be used properly, the manual says not to use a vehicle belt install with the base.

The tension indicators turn completely green when the LATCH or vehicle belt is tightened correctly, and the manual says no red should show. You still check by hand: hold the base only at the belt path and push side to side. It should not move more than 1 inch. If it does, the manual suggests pulling the belt tighter, reinstalling, choosing another seating position or switching between LATCH and the vehicle belt. The level line must be parallel with the ground, and a rolled towel or pool noodle under the front of the base is allowed only if necessary.

The canopy hoop moves front to back. To remove the canopy, you undo the fastening strip on the back and press the tab on one of the two canopy posts. The head and body pillows must be used together, and the head pillow must not cover the face. The seat pad is machine washed separately in cold water on a gentle cycle, without bleach, and tumble dried separately for 10 to 12 minutes on low heat. The canopy is hand washed and line dried, and the buckle is spot cleaned, never submerged.
