Who is the Dreamride Infant Car Bed for?

The Safety 1st Dreamride is a side-facing car bed for infants who must travel lying down, sold only with a physician's prescription. The manual limits it to 5 to 20 lb, 26 inches or less and under 1 year of age. It installs with LATCH belts or a vehicle belt, is not certified for aircraft and expires after 8 years.

Reasons to consider it

  • Infants whose physician prescribes lying-down travel
  • LATCH belts or a vehicle belt, with belt loops that move to either side
  • A 3-point harness with a removable, machine-washable pad

Things to weigh up

  • Sold only with a prescription, and Safety 1st contacts the buyer before shipping
  • Limited to 5 to 20 lb, 26 inches or less and under 1 year
  • Not certified for aircraft use
  • Safety 1st does not publish its width or how much of the back seat it takes

My take on the Dreamride Infant Car Bed

The Dreamride is a medical travel option for a baby whose licensed physician has prescribed lying-down travel, not an alternative to an ordinary infant seat. Its limits are much lower than a standard carrier: the onBoard FLX, for comparison, is listed for 4 to 30 lbs. and up to 32". It also cannot be used on a plane, so travel plans need a separate answer.

How the Dreamride Infant Car Bed installs

Lower anchors
LATCH-equipped. Check your vehicle manual for which seating positions have anchors, and switch to the seat belt once the child passes the anchor weight limit in the manual.
Harness
3-point harness. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

Safety 1st does not publish a width for this seat, so measure your back seat and compare it with the seat in a store before buying.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Not certified for aircraft use: plan on gate-checking it or using a different seat to fly.

What to know before you live with it

How it sits in the car

The car bed always goes sideways, with the infant's head toward the center of the vehicle, and only on forward-facing vehicle seats. The belt loops must be on the side against the vehicle seat back, and the manual shows how to move the loops and LATCH belts to the other side. It says the back seat is preferred, but the front passenger seat is acceptable even with an airbag if the car bed does not interfere with driving and the seat is moved as far back as possible. The handle must be upright and locked in the vehicle.

LATCH or vehicle belt

For LATCH, each belt is threaded through its belt loop, hooked to the lower anchor in the seat bight and tightened while you lay your forearm across the bed. For a vehicle belt, LATCH is stored by hooking the belts together around the shell. You must have a lap belt, inflatable belts are not allowed, and an emergency locking retractor lap-only belt must not be used. A sliding latch plate with an emergency locking retractor needs a locking clip. If the bed moves more than 1 inch at the belt path, the manual says to reinstall it or try another position or method.

Harness, handle and care

The 3-point harness and the buckle strap are adjusted by relacing adjustment slides, under the pad for the harness and under the shell for the buckle strap. The manual says to secure infants on their backs unless a doctor advises otherwise, and to avoid bulky clothing and extra padding in the head area. Rotating the handle fully back puts the bed in a rocking mode that must not be used in the vehicle. The pad is machine washed in cold water on a gentle cycle and tumble dried for 10 to 12 minutes on low heat, and the bed is never used without the pad or foam inserts.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Safety 1st so you hear about the next one.
