Who is the Aton G2 Swivel for?

The Aton G2 Swivel is a rear-facing infant car seat that CYBEX lists for babies from 4 to 30 lb and up to 32 in tall, with the top of the head at least 1 in below the top of the carrier. Its load leg base rotates 180 degrees for loading, and the seat is certified for 6 years.

Reasons to consider it

  • A base that rotates 180 degrees so the carrier faces you when loading
  • An anti-rebound bar and a load leg on the same base
  • A 9 lb carrier that is 17.5 in wide, as listed by CYBEX
  • Installation without the base on a locking lap/shoulder belt

Things to weigh up

  • No US owner's manual is published in the CYBEX Download Center, so I could not check the installation steps
  • The product page contradicts itself: one answer says 4 to 30 lb and up to 32 in, another says 4 to 35 lb and 17 to 32 in
  • Never swivel the seat or base while the car is moving
  • Rear-facing only, so a convertible seat follows

My take on the Aton G2 Swivel

The Swivel suits a parent who wants to turn the carrier toward them for loading, which CYBEX says helps most once the baby is older and heavier to carry. CYBEX publishes no US owner's manual for it in its Download Center, so this summary relies on the product page. Against the plain Aton G2, the carrier limits and dimensions are the same; the base is the difference.

Who the Aton G2 Swivel fits

This seat covers one stage. Cybex gives it a 6-year life from the date of manufacture, so check the date label before using a hand-me-down.

How the Aton G2 Swivel installs

Harness
11-position no-rethread headrest. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

At 17.5 in at its widest, this seat is one of the narrower ones in its class and is a candidate for three across in many mid-size cars. It weighs 9 lb, which matters if you will move it between cars or carry it through an airport.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Certified for aircraft use, so it can travel as a seat rather than checked baggage.

What features does the Aton G2 Swivel have?

  • Rotates 180 degrees (on swivel base)
  • Anti-rebound base with load leg
  • SensorSafe chest clip
  • Linear side-impact protection
  • SafeLock belt tensioner
  • 11-position no-rethread headrest
  • Rear-facing only

Where Cybex’s page and manual disagree

  • Product page: Spec list and one FAQ: 4-30 lbs, max 32 in; Product page faq: A second FAQ answer on the same page: 4-35 lbs and 17-32 in

When they differ, follow the manual and the labels on your seat.

What to know before you live with it

What the swivel base does

With the base installed, the seat turns 180 degrees toward you so you can load and unload the child. CYBEX suggests this helps most when the baby is older and carrying the carrier gets heavy, and says a younger infant under 20 pounds can be lifted straight into a compatible CYBEX carry cot. Neither the seat nor the base should be turned while the car is moving. You can leave it swiveled while parked, but it must be rotated back to the drive position before you travel on. The base also has in-base recline, so the angle can change without reinstalling it.

Installation, as far as the page describes it

Without a published manual, the product page is the only CYBEX source. It lists an anti-rebound bar and a load leg on the swivel base and a SafeLock belt tensioner. It does not say whether the base uses rigid or flexible lower anchors; its general answer allows flexible connectors spaced 11 to 20 in apart where the vehicle maker allows it. The carrier has alternate belt guides for use without the base, with a locking lap/shoulder belt only. After installation there should be less than 1 in of movement at the belt path, and a small gap between the anti-rebound bar and the vehicle seat back is acceptable.

Care, canopy and what comes in the box

The fabrics are machine washed separately in cold water on a delicate cycle, with no bleach, then drip dried and not ironed. The box contains the Aton G2 Swivel, the Aton G2 Swivel load leg base, the SensorSafe clip, an infant insert and an owner's manual. CYBEX recommends the insert until about 11 lbs or about 3 months. The canopy is listed as UPF50+, and the headrest has 11 positions with a no-rethread harness. The seat is listed as compatible with all CYBEX strollers and with both the Aton G2 base and the swivel base.

Answers refer to the model and manual version on this page. Check the instructions supplied with your seat.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect; Cybex lists 4 colors of this seat.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Cybex so you hear about the next one.
