Who is the Cloud G Pro with Load Leg Base for?

The Cloud G Pro is a rear-facing infant car seat for babies from 4 to 30 lb and up to 32 in tall, with the top of the head at least 1 in below the top of the carrier. It comes with a rigid LATCH load leg base, reclines near flat on a stroller, and is certified for 6 years.

Reasons to consider it

  • A backrest and leg rest that recline outside the vehicle, which CYBEX says is 45% flatter than upright
  • A one-click rigid LATCH base with an anti-rebound bar and a load leg
  • A 12-position headrest with an integrated harness
  • Installation without the base on a locking lap/shoulder belt

Things to weigh up

  • CYBEX lists it at 12 lbs, a real load to carry once the baby is in it
  • No US owner's manual was in the CYBEX Download Center when the catalog was checked, so I relied on the product page
  • Cloud line bases are not always interchangeable; a second car needs the Cloud G Pro / Cloud T accessory base
  • Not for use with inflatable seat belts

My take on the Cloud G Pro with Load Leg Base

The Cloud G Pro suits a family that will use the carrier on a CYBEX stroller often, since its backrest and leg rest recline outside the car. The trade-off is weight: CYBEX lists it at 12 lbs. It shares its limits and dimensions with the Platinum Cloud T, which adds premium fabrics and a published US manual.

How the Cloud G Pro with Load Leg Base installs

Rigid LATCH
Rigid LATCH. Rigid connectors click straight onto the vehicle's lower anchor bars, which removes the strap slack that causes loose installs.
Recline
Lie-flat recline outside vehicle. The recline angle is what keeps a young baby’s airway open, so set it before tightening the install.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

At 17.6 in at its widest, measure your back seat before counting on three across. It weighs 12 lb, which matters if you will move it between cars or carry it through an airport.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Certified for aircraft use, so it can travel as a seat rather than checked baggage.

What to know before you live with it

Full recline is for the stroller, not the car

Outside the vehicle, the backrest reclines and the leg rest extends for a near-flat position, which CYBEX describes as 45% flatter than upright. It works with one hand and without adjusting the harness: hold the carry handle, squeeze the recline release handle and push the seatback down until it locks. To return to car seat mode, squeeze the release handle and lift the seatback until it locks upright. The handle stays in the carrying position. CYBEX says full recline mode is compatible with all CYBEX strollers and is only for use outside the vehicle.

The base and installation

The included base uses one-click rigid LATCH and combines an anti-rebound bar with a load leg. CYBEX says never to use rigid LATCH and the vehicle seat belt together. Rigid connectors are spaced exactly 11 in apart to match standard vehicle anchors. Without the base, the carrier's alternate belt guides take a locking lap/shoulder belt, with the buckle and hardware kept clear of the carrier. Once installed, it should move less than 1 in at the belt path. If the recline falls short, a rolled towel or pool noodle goes beneath the base, with the adjustable foot stored first.

Care, insert and what is in the box

The box contains the Cloud G Pro with SensorSafe, the Cloud G Pro base, an infant insert and an owner's manual. CYBEX recommends the insert until about 11 lbs or about 3 months; its side wings fold in for a smaller baby. Seat fabrics can be spot cleaned or machine washed with mild detergent in cold water on a delicate cycle, then air dried. Harness straps are spot cleaned only, and plastic parts are wiped. The SensorSafe clip sends phone alerts if it is unbuckled, if the back seat gets too warm or too cold, or if the child is left behind.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect; Cybex lists 6 colors of this seat.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Cybex so you hear about the next one.
