Who is the LiteMax 30 Infant Car Seat for?

The LiteMax 30 is a rear-facing infant car seat for babies from 3 to 30 lb and 15.7 to 32 in, with the head at least 1 in below the top of the seat back. The 8.17 lb carrier clicks into a convenience base with a One Step Lock-Off, or belts in alone. Expiry is on the label.

Reasons to consider it

  • An 8.17 lb carrier, per Evenflo's specifications
  • A recline indicator with separate zones for 3 to 20 lb and 20 to 30 lb
  • A base that installs with lower anchors or a seat belt and a One Step Lock-Off
  • Carrier-only use in cars and aircraft

Things to weigh up

  • The harness must be rethreaded to change height
  • Listed at 19 in wide
  • Handle Positions 2 and 4 are never used in a vehicle
  • No expiry years given, only a date on the label

My take on the LiteMax 30 Infant Car Seat

The LiteMax 30 is the simpler LiteMax: a rethread harness with 4 shoulder positions, a four-position handle and a base with a lock-off, without SensorSafe or a no-rethread headrest. It suits a parent who wants a light carrier and does not need app features. The trade-off against the LiteMax NXT seats is moving the harness by hand as the baby grows.

How the LiteMax 30 Infant Car Seat installs

Harness
4 shoulder harness positions. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

Every install is a fit between one seat and one vehicle. Read both manuals, and use a free inspection station if anything is unclear.

Will it fit your car?

At 19 in at its widest, measure your back seat before counting on three across. It weighs 8.17 lb, which matters if you will move it between cars or carry it through an airport.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.
  • Certified for aircraft use, so it can travel as a seat rather than checked baggage.

What features does the LiteMax 30 Infant Car Seat have?

What to know before you live with it

Installing the convenience base

Start on level ground. Push the base into the seat and check the recline indicator: the white line must sit in the blue zone for 3 to 20 lb or the green zone for 20 to 30 lb, never in red. Depending on your base, a knob or a fold-down leveling foot changes the angle. Open the One Step Lock-Off, attach the lower anchor hooks or clips, push down with your full weight while pulling the strap tight, then close the lock-off until it clicks. A seat belt install is also covered. The base may not move more than 1 in side to side or front to back.

The four handle positions

Squeeze both handle releases to move the handle. Position 1 is for carrying and is a travel position in the U.S. and Canada. Position 2 is a convenience position, never used to carry the baby or in the vehicle. Position 3 is a U.S.-only travel position. Position 4 is a stand position for setting the carrier on level ground, and is never used in a vehicle. The manual says the handle must be locked in Position 1 before lifting the child, and Canadian models must travel in Position 1 only.

Moving the harness as the baby grows

This is a rethread harness. Loosen the straps, slide them off the splitter plate at the back, pull them through to the front, and push them through the slots closest to, but never above, the baby's shoulders, making sure they pass through matching slots in the pad and shell. The straps have two loops for the splitter plate: the top loop for a newborn and the bottom loop as the baby grows. Evenflo's page counts 4 shoulder harness positions. The buckle strap and waist straps also have more than one slot.

Before you buy

  1. Weigh and measure your child. The limits above are the manufacturer’s, and a child has to meet all of them for the mode they will use.
  2. Confirm the exact version. Colors, retail exclusives and model numbers change limits more often than you would expect.
  3. Read the manual before you buy, not after. It is linked above and holds the fit rules, the install methods and the expiry.
  4. Check recalls by model number and date of manufacture, and register the seat with Evenflo so you hear about the next one.
