My take on the Light 'n Comfy Infant Car Seat

The Light 'n Comfy suits a family that wants a carrier that clicks between a car base and the Simple Stroll stroller, since Cosco's US site sells it only inside that travel system. The trade-off is its limits: 30 lb and 32 in, with a 1 in headroom rule that can end use sooner. Cosco's Scenera Extend convertible stays rear-facing to 40 lb and 40 in, but it is a convertible seat, not an infant carrier.

How the Light 'n Comfy Infant Car Seat installs

Lower anchors: LATCH-equipped base. Check your vehicle manual for which seating positions have anchors, and switch to the seat belt once the child passes the anchor weight limit in the manual.
Recline: 2-position base recline. The recline angle is what keeps a young baby’s airway open, so set it before tightening the install.
Harness: 5-point harness. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

What to know before you live with it

Three ways to install it

The base installs with the LATCH lower anchor belt or with a vehicle lap or lap and shoulder belt through the base belt path, never both at once. A seat belt installation needs a way to lock the belt, either a switchable retractor or a locking latch plate, and the manual explains how to check which you have. Without the base, the vehicle belt goes through the shell belt path. Either way, it should not move more than 1 in at the belt path, the level line should be parallel with the ground (the manual allows slightly more recline for a baby who cannot sit up unassisted), and the carry handle must be upright and locked in the car.

Harness heights, buckle slots and recline

The harness loosens with a release lever reached through the pad and tightens by pulling the adjustment strap at the front. Changing harness height means rethreading the straps from the back of the seat into the slots for your baby; the straps must sit at or slightly below the shoulders, never above. The buckle moves between slots from underneath, and the manual explains a shorter buckle strap and harness setting for smaller infants. The base has a foot that you lower or store to change its angle, and the manual allows a tightly rolled towel or pool noodle under the front if the level line still needs it.

Carrier rules outside the car

The carry handle has buttons on each side to rotate it, and it must be upright and locked when carrying and in the vehicle. The manual warns never to place the carrier on beds, sofas or other soft surfaces, or on counters, tables or other raised surfaces, and not to use it on a shopping cart. It also says to keep the harness fully buckled when the carrier is used outside the vehicle. When the base is used, only a compatible Light 'n Comfy base may be used.

Washing the pad and canopy

The pad comes off only after removing the harness system and accessories, which the manual describes step by step. The pad and accessories go in the machine separately in cold water on a gentle cycle, with no bleach, then tumble dry separately for 10 to 12 minutes on low heat. Harness straps, the buckle and the shell are spot cleaned with warm sudsy water and a damp cloth, and the buckle must not be submerged. The canopy is hand washed and line dried.

The manual gives 4 to 30 lb and 32 in or less. The top of the baby's head must also be at least 1 in below the top of the car seat, and reaching any one limit means the seat is outgrown.

Can the Light 'n Comfy be used on an airplane?

Yes. The manual says it is certified for aircraft use, installed rear-facing without the base on a forward-facing aircraft seat. It suggests a window seat and a belt extender from the flight attendant if the lap belt is too short.
