The child is always held by the vehicle lap and shoulder belt; lap-only and inflatable belts are never allowed. The Isofix LATCH connectors are optional. You press the button and slide each connector out, attach them to the anchor bars and push the booster back flat against the upright vehicle seat back. The manual says not to use LATCH if it makes the buckle hard to reach, if the buckle sits between the anchors, or if the anchors are above the seat bight. Either way, keep the booster secured when nobody is in it.
Maxi-Cosi's product page describes a multi-position reclining backrest for a relaxing ride. The manual is narrower: the reclined position is only to be used to install the booster flush against the vehicle seat back, and the vehicle seat back must be upright. You rotate the backrest back until it clicks once. To fit a flush install around a vehicle headrest, the manual suggests checking whether the vehicle headrest can be removed or adjusted, or trying another seating position.
To remove the backrest, rotate it all the way back until it clicks twice and lift it out. In backless mode the tops of the child's ears must not be above the top of the vehicle seat back or headrest, and the head must be at least 5 in. below the roof. The lap belt goes under both armrests, with the shoulder belt under the armrest on the buckle side. The belt-positioning clip is used only if needed, on the side nearest the vehicle buckle, and must be removed before refitting the backrest.
