The child is always restrained by the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt. The rigid LATCH only adds stability and keeps the empty booster from moving in a crash. Peg Perego calls LATCH optional but strongly recommends it. You pull the front handle to eject both connectors and click them onto the anchors. A green signal above each connector shows it is coupled, red means it is not. Squeezing the handle again and pushing the booster back hides the release buttons, so another passenger cannot release it. If the belt buckle sits too close to the anchors, both may not fit together.
