The Cosco Rise LX is a backless belt-positioning booster for children 40 to 100 lb and 43.4 to 57 inches tall. It has no harness and no LATCH, so it is held only by the vehicle lap and shoulder belt. The manual sets a 10-year limit from the date of manufacture and says it is not certified for aircraft use.
The Rise LX suits a child who has outgrown a harness, sits in a seating position with a lap and shoulder belt, and has vehicle head support at ear level. The trade-off is that it has no back or headrest, so the manual says any extra head and body protection depends on the vehicle. There is no installation step apart from the seat belt. The manual says to center the booster in a forward-facing seating position with the vehicle seat back upright and the back of the booster flat against it. The child sits with back and bottom flat. The lap portion of the lap and shoulder belt goes under both armrests and should lie snugly across the upper thighs and hips, not the stomach. The shoulder belt must go under the armrest on the buckle side and lie across the center of the shoulder and the chest, never under the arm.
The manual lists two limits: 100 lb or 57 in, whichever comes first. A child can also stop using it once the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt fits properly without a booster. Two vehicle checks can end use sooner. The top of the child's ears must not be above the top of the vehicle seat back or headrest, and the child's head must be at least 5 in below the roof of the car. Because the booster has no back, the manual says to consider the vehicle's own protection systems when choosing where to use it.
To clean the pad, the manual says to start from the front and pull the seat pad off the shell and over the armrests. Machine wash it separately in cold water on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry it separately for 10 to 12 minutes on low heat and remove it immediately. Do not use bleach or harsh cleaners, and do not dry clean it. To refit it, slip the pad over the armrests and around the back, then pull it over the front. The manual warns not to use the booster without the pad.
Cosco describes the Rise LX as having a wider base and covered higher armrests so a child can buckle themselves, and a stable platform meant to let children get in and out without it tipping. It also says the slim design fits three across the back seat of most vehicles. Cosco does not publish a width, so I would measure the seating position and the boosters or car seats next to it before relying on that claim.
