My take on the Finale 2-in-1 Booster Car Seat

The Finale 2-in-1 suits a child who has outgrown a rear-facing seat and is at least 40 lb and 43.4 in., in a family that wants a harness first and a booster later from one seat. The trade-off is effort: harness height means rethreading, converting to a booster means removing the harness, and the lower anchors stop at 50 lb. The Finale DX uses the same manual, and Cosco lists the same limits for it.

How the Finale 2-in-1 Booster Car Seat installs

Lower anchors: Lower anchors (harness mode). Check your vehicle manual for which seating positions have anchors, and switch to the seat belt once the child passes the anchor weight limit in the manual.
Harness: 5-point harness. Check the harness height at each growth spurt: at or below the shoulders rear-facing, at or above them forward-facing.

What to know before you live with it

Harness mode installation

In harness mode the Finale faces forward only. The manual allows the lower anchor belt with the tether for children up to 50 lb, and the vehicle lap belt or lap and shoulder belt with the tether up to 65 lb. You must always attach the tether when anchors are available, and never use the lower anchor belt together with a vehicle belt. The child's ears must be below the top of the seat, and the straps must be at or slightly above the shoulders. Changing strap height means pulling the straps from the splitter plate and rethreading them into the right shoulder slots.

Switching to booster mode

The manual says to remove the harness system to convert to booster mode, then store the buckle by pushing its metal retainer up through the buckle slot so it hangs under the shell. In booster mode, do not use LATCH or the harness, and store the lower anchor belt and tether. The lap belt goes under both armrests and lies across the upper thighs. The shoulder belt goes only under the armrest on the buckle side and across the chest and shoulder. The ears must not be above the top of the headrest, and the head must be at least 5 in. below the vehicle roof. Keep it belted when empty.

Cleaning the pad

The manual says you must remove the harness system to take the pad off the shell. Release the elastic straps from the tabs on the back of the shell, then pull the pad off. Machine wash it separately in cold water on a gentle cycle, with no bleach, and tumble dry it separately for 10 to 12 minutes on low heat, removing it immediately. The harness straps, buckle and shell are spot cleaned with warm sudsy water and a damp cloth, and the buckle must not be submerged. When reinstalling the harness, the manual warns the adjustment strap must sit behind the harness strap.

Can I use LATCH with the Finale 2-in-1 until 65 lb?

No. The manual says not to use the lower anchors for a child weighing more than 50 lb. From there to 65 lb, use the vehicle belt with the tether, and do not use LATCH at all in booster mode.

Is there a minimum age for the Finale 2-in-1?

The manual sets weight and height minimums (40 lb and 43.4 in.) but does not publish a minimum age. It says a child should use a forward-facing seat only after outgrowing rear-facing limits.

Can the Finale 2-in-1 be used on an airplane?

Only in harness mode, on a forward-facing aircraft seat, following the vehicle belt steps without the tether. The manual says it is not certified for aircraft use as a booster because aircraft seats have no shoulder belts.
