Who is the Chase LX Harnessed Booster Car Seat for?

The Chase LX is a forward-facing harnessed booster. The manual sets the 5-point harness at 30 to 40 lb and 35 to 43.3 in for children at least 2 years old, then a high-back booster at 40 to 100 lb and 43.3 to 57 in for children at least 5. Evenflo lists it at 9.14 lb and 21.9 in wide.

Reasons to consider it

  • LATCH or seat belt installation, with the tether used in harness mode
  • Certified for aircraft when used with the 5-point harness
  • 2 crotch buckle positions, two cup holders and a removable head pillow
  • A high-back booster mode to 100 lb and 57 in

Things to weigh up

  • The harness stage ends at 40 lb or 43.3 in
  • Not certified for aircraft in booster mode
  • The product page lists 22 to 110 lb overall, while the manual gives 30 to 40 lb and 40 to 100 lb
  • No expiration period in years; the manual points to a label

My take on the Chase LX Harnessed Booster Car Seat

It suits a child who has outgrown a rear-facing seat by size and still needs a harness, then a high-back booster later. The trade-off is a short harness stage of 30 to 40 lb, and a child who outgrows it before age 5 must leave the seat. The Chase Plus has the same limits and 21.9 in width and is listed at 9.5 lb, while the Maestro Sport keeps the harness to 50 lb and is listed at 19 in wide.

Who the Chase LX Harnessed Booster Car Seat fits

This seat covers 2 stages, and a child has to meet every limit of the stage they are in. Check the date label on the shell before using a hand-me-down; every seat has an expiry.

Forward-facing harness30 to 40 lb · 35 to 43.3 in · from 2 years
The child faces forward in the seat’s own harness. Use the top tether every time, and stay in the harness until the child outgrows it.
High-back booster40 to 100 lb · 43.3 to 57 in · from 5 years
The seat’s own back and belt guide route the vehicle belt across the shoulder, and the sides give the child something to lean on when they sleep.

  • Check your vehicle manual for lower anchor positions and any head-restraint rules.
  • Rear-facing seats need front-seat room: try the install behind the driver before you commit.

Where Evenflo’s page and manual disagree

  • Recorded from manual.

When they differ, follow the manual and the labels on your seat.

What to know before you live with it

Installing in harness mode

The seat is forward-facing only and must never be used rear-facing. Install it with the lower anchor connector assembly or the vehicle belt through the belt path, not both, and the manual says to always use the top tether in harness mode. It must not move more than 1 in side to side or front to back at the belt path. A center install with the inner lower anchor bars of the outer seats is allowed if the vehicle manual permits it and the bars are 11 - 20 in apart. The manual also says never to use the seat without its headrest installed.

Harness and buckle adjustments

The harness straps sit at the child's shoulder level or the closest slot slightly above. To move them, press the release button, pull the straps free of the splitter plate and feed them through the new slot in both the pad and the shell. When reattached, the strap loops should look bunched on the splitter plate. The buckle strap moves to the slot closest to the child but never under the bottom. The harness stage ends when the child exceeds 40 lb or 43.3 in, the ears pass the top of the headrest, or the shoulders pass the highest harness level.

Converting to a booster and routing the belt

To convert, you loosen the harness, pull the straps through to the front, remove the seat pad, route the straps through the adjustment slots and reattach them to the splitter plate. The chest clip and buckle tongues tuck into recesses on either side of the shell. The buckle strap anchor is pushed out through the shell, then fed back in from the bottom so the strap lies flat. In booster mode use only a lap and shoulder belt, never a lap belt alone. The shoulder belt passes under the headrest while the shoulders are at or below that opening; if that pulls the belt down behind the shoulder, it goes over the headrest instead. Keep the booster secured when empty.

Cleaning and air travel

Remove the EPS foam from the headrest pad before washing. Machine wash the seat pad separately in cold water on a delicate cycle and tumble dry 10 to 15 minutes on low heat. Wipe the harness with mild soap and water and let it air dry, and never use the seat without its pad. On a plane, the seat is certified only with the 5-point harness. It goes forward-facing on a fully upright aircraft seat, with the aircraft belt through the belt path opening in the back, and must not move more than 1 in.
