In high-back mode, the tops of the ears must be below the top of the booster headrest, and the shoulder belt guide must be at or above the shoulder. If the shoulder is above the guide with the headrest at its highest, the child is too big for high-back mode. In backless mode, the ears must be below the top of the vehicle seat back or vehicle headrest instead. In both modes the lap belt sits low on the hips and the shoulder belt crosses the middle of the chest and shoulder. A child who cannot stay still enough to keep the belt in place belongs back in a harness seat.
The manual says to secure the booster with rigid LATCH whenever the vehicle has it, and it still works with the seat belt alone if not. Do not use LATCH if it leaves the seat belt buckle hard to reach, or if the buckle or belt sits between the anchors. The recline handle at the front releases the connectors and sets the seat back angle. The booster headrest must stay in contact with the vehicle seat back or headrest, and the manual says never to recline it while driving.
