What to know before you live with it
How it is held in the car
There is no LATCH and no separate installation step. The manual says to place the booster forward-facing in the back seat with its bottom as flat as possible, thread the shoulder belt through the guide on the headrest, and buckle the child in. The lap belt must go under both armrests and lie low across the hips and thighs, and the shoulder belt goes under the armrest on the buckle side. The front of the booster must not hang over the vehicle seat, and the vehicle seat headrest must not create a gap between the vehicle seat and the booster. Graco also says to keep it buckled when unoccupied, because a loose booster can injure occupants in a crash.
Setting the headrest and checking belt fit
You raise or lower the headrest by squeezing the adjustment lever, then pull on it to check that it has locked into one of 6 height positions. The belt guides should sit even with or just above the shoulders, so the shoulder belt crosses the shoulder between the neck and the edge of the shoulder (the manual calls this the red zone). The belt must never go under the arm or behind the back, and it must lie flat, not twisted. If your child will not keep the belt in place, or slouches and slides down, the manual says not to use this booster and to use a different car seat.
Using it as a backless booster
To convert it, you recline the back and lift it off the base. The backless booster still needs a lap and shoulder belt. In this mode the manual adds one check: the child's ears must be below the top of the vehicle seat back or headrest. If the shoulder belt falls outside the red zone, you must use the belt positioning clip. Its strap loops through a slot on the bottom of the base, and the clip slides onto the shoulder belt so that it sits right at the top of the shoulder.
Armrests, cover and cleaning
On models that need assembly, the armrests clip into the base and are held at your chosen height with a screw. To move them, you remove the screw, press the button and reinsert the screw. The cover comes off by releasing elastic loops and hooks. Graco says to machine wash it in cold water on a delicate cycle, drip dry it and not use bleach.
